Re: New Road Tax rules

My tax is going up by 115% in two years to the princely sum of £455. Am i going to sell my car and buy a ford KA? Am I buggery.

Obviously this Tax hike is aimed at revenue generation rather than conservation, as is congestion charging, emissions zones, blah blah blah.

You don't buy performance cars for financial reasons, you buy them cause you love em, we will always bear the brunt of knee jerk, media friendly enviromentally justified ******** taxation.

Trick is to win on other fronts, let them have this battle.

Re: New Road Tax rules

It's not really a "road tax" anymore ... doesn't really have a label that I can think off ...

anyway if this is truely for environmental reasons (which obviously no-one actually believes), then surely rather than having a flat rate based upon the car, you should be taxed on the amount of CO2 you produce over the year ... so we need some way of measuring the CO2 produced by cars ...

... hold on the amount of CO2 produced is a direct result of the amount of petrol/diesel that is burnt, so surely all they need to do is tax the petrol/diesel ... hold on they already tax that heavily!!!!

Next thing they'll try and do is tax me for breathing!!!!

Yes, I've often wondered why they don't just add it to the petrol, would be a much fairer way to go about it (user pays, etc...) Hold up, wouldn't that be too fair? The gov't surely cannot do something above-board and honest, now could it???

Re: New Road Tax rules

Look men its going up there is bu**er all you can do about it. Its not political if you think the Tories will change it when or if they get in you are in a dream world. The fact is we have a car and within reason we will pay what it costs to keep it on the road in most of us will sacrifice something else before we give up our motor.
Its time to quit whinging and go out and buy those road tax stamps at the post office.
Just to add a bit of controversy why shouldnt people whose cars pump out more carbons or whatever pay more?

A 2.5 V6 sitting on the driveway pumps out less carbons than a Prius being driven though....

Re: New Road Tax rules

fuel is going to be the biggest cost compared to road tax in the coming years price is changing on a weekly basis and its only going to get worse. Demand will outstrip supply within 7 years so we might as well enjoy our cars just now

Re: New Road Tax rules

The Great Britsh Robbery if you ask me. I was looking to get a Alfa 156 GTA 3.2 litre but now rethinking cos I can't bring myself to pay the £400 road tax. Think I'm going to keep my spider, its a 1996 so looks like I will escape. Bring on the general election - I've had enough of being taxed now !

Re: New Road Tax rules

taxing petrol is the best user chooser tax - the new rates of road tax are purely an environmental sop by those jealous of people wealthy enough to afford a larger car. Sadly all it means is that those of us who would buy a used guzzler probably won't. My 166 is going to have to go in the next 12 months, not because of road tax (its a year 2000) - OMG I'm might buy a oil burner - not happy at all !

Italy used to have double VAT on cars over 2,000 which I always felt lead to a range of engines from Fiat and Alfa of circa 2,000 that gave class leading BHP / ltr - think Fiat and Alfa twin cams and then compare with OHV fords and Vauxhalls of the day.

The trouble is many of the cars that will suffer a tax hike have only 1.6 litre engines. Most people would agree that 1.6 and even 2 litre engines were not excessively large.

Then there is the issue of the poor sod, that just before the budget bought a new car that just so happens to be in one of the higher tax bands. Imagine how pee'd off you would be knowing that you are going to suffer massive depreciation on top of your increased tax bill.

Also there is the issue of us being taxed too much in general, and the increased road tax is just part of it, along with higher council tax, the loss of the 10p tax band etc...

I am planning an escape from this country, possibly next year.

Fiat Coupe 20VT, mildly tuned to 260bhp

Demonstrating in London about Human rights in some far flung corner of the globe, Why are the People not on the streets demonstrating about the Abuse going on in this country? It makes me sick to the stomach that we still do nothing.

Morning Ray

We failed to put the world too right on friday night.
It was just one of those cracking nights, full of
old fashioned belly laughter.

But taking your point,RE; above .

IT would be interesting too run a poll
To see how many members have seen,
or spoken to their local M.P. etc?
I do not have the qwerty skills to do so.

Did not the Poll tax lose face.
due to the power of the march?

John.

Yep, 2 out of 3 have dropped substantially for me!

The road tax increase for some and fuel price increase for all is hardly a surprise, bigger, faster engines have been persecuted for the last 5 years and it's only going to get worse. That's why I gave up on petrol engines years ago and would never buy one for an every day commuting car again.

Morning John

The poll tax protestors failed because Margaret thatcher was a smart woman, she used Scotland as a Guinea Pig and caused chaos their once the damage was done she then implemented it Uk wide. The Scots were the most vocal about the Tax but unfortunately were not backed by the rest of the UK until it was too late.

The other problem with this island is that whilst the im alright Jack brigade sit in comfort the people being affected most are falling deeper down the slippery slope, now if everyone in the country was hammered at the one time to the extent that their standard of living was significantly poorer then im sure the "im ok brigade" would suddenly spring to life.

Hence my old saying we are not being squeezed hard enough because we are not squealing loud enough
