On the road tax question specifically, the amount of tax being rebated for those with low emissions cars is around £10 million. The amount extra being taken off everyone else is around £700 million.
Those figures aren't exact, as I read them a couple of weeks ago and can't remember where, but they're about right, based on what cars are on the road.

So about 1.4% of drivers will be better off, not the 80% that Darling claims.
Also if everyone sold their high tax car and bought a low tax car he would loose lots of revenue, so in the end he would have to put up the tax back up on the low emission vehicles.

Darling is a muppet, but he didn't say 80% of drivers, he said 80% of the public. Which is still very wrong, but less wrong than you imply.
And when he says better off, does he mean financially, or in a well being and satisfactory standard of living sense?
All to often politicos say mindless things, which are actually correct (in their own mind at least) but they're correct in a long drawn out round the houses, bizarre way, rather than the straightforward, sensible way the public perceives the statement.

I see your point, I mistook memenbers of the public for drivers..
Thinking about it though, how many cars are there in the UK compared to the number of people that live here? You can bet that virtually all households have at least one car, and if the breadwinner needs a car for work, the the whole family, kids and all will be worse off financially. Whether the car is private or company, the taxman will get his money one way or another.
Darling has attemted to manipulate the figures in his favour somewhat. But really it amounts to legalised theft of our hard earned money.

Re: New Road Tax rules
This is just the goverment jumping on the green bandwagon to rip us off for more cash.
I changed to a new car as it was greener than my previous car, I now get punished for doing it.
Maybe I should buy a 6 litre aston from 1995 and pay £185 a year not the £450 they want for my new car.

Re: New Road Tax rules
I'm loving it!
The tax on the 1.9JTD engine had gone down from £210 a year to £140. Me and girlie are also going to be paying a lot less tax on the wages. Nice one Mr Brown, the first time I've had more money from a budget.
Time for you all to convert to the fuel of satan!

Re: New Road Tax rules
Since this thread started China commissioned another 2 coal fired power stations - if we want to stop global warming we need to stop having so many babies. I'm nearly 50 and in my lifetime population (and therefore emissions by respiration )have trebled - Even if every UK citizen drove a pedal car it would make little difference to global emissions and they will still rise as the population rises ) This is a revenue raising ploy that will be accepted because it is only the minority that drive large cars and who cares if the minority get hammered - you still get voted in. There is so much misuse of statistics in climate science that I gag when I hear some expert lecturing about carbon footprints.
