ok i have done a bunch of searching but have not found a useful thread on this.

Upon start up quite often i hear what sounds like a possum in the boot. Hissing and scratching.
Or maybe the sound of a garden hose water makes when the pipes are empty before the water emerges?

Im thinking it may have to do with the motor for the electric antenna?? But im guessing atm and it happens also when the radio is off.

Do these symptoms sound familiar to any one? any tips?

My antenna won't fully go down, when I switch on the ignition I can hear the motor run for about 2 til 3 seconds, but then stops, when I turn on the radio the noise of the motor is drownded out by the radio.turn on your radio with the volume down and when your antenna goes up see if it's the same sound as your possum.

The only other sound I had that sounded like it was coming from my boot was a tapping sound like I had a rear shelf that was not secured and was moving around in the boot.

I later found out that it was my rear spring pan suspension arm that was loose and needed replacing.

But it is strange how you think sounds are coming from the boot.

'vapour recovery system' possible source of noise?

Sounds like a helpful clue. The sound has gone for now as i filled my tank last week but when it returns i shall do a more thorough check. I am also thinking it may have mostly happened on hotter days? not sure?
Your comment sent me to the manual so I have been reading the fuel supply section for the v6 of the GTV manual vol1 on page 619 it explains the 'vapour recovery system' briefly. Im thinking that this may make noise on hot days.

The manual doesn't detail its location though. Does anyone know?

Are you talking about an intermittent (ie. not constant) hiss/whine from the rear of the car that is only present when idling (eg. waiting at a red light)?

If so, I've got the exact same thing on my '02 TS. Been wondering what it was but never gotten around to looking into it. The car seems to be running without issue and the guys at Eurosport (alfa specialists) haven't noted anything. Would be interested if you have the same thing to find out the reason why this happens.

Yep they're the ones! Peter (the owner) is a nice bloke. Very helpful with any questions you might have and their communication is excellent. They come highly recommended (Peter is an Alfa Club SA life member) so for anything serious I take my baby there. Otherwise I'll take it to my local indie if its just a general fix or non-Alfa specific concern as Eurosport are pretty pricey @ $120p/h. But then again, they do good work and I know that once they fix it, its fixed. Unlike some others I have had the displeasure of dealing with with previous cars :tut:

And yea I suspected the fuel pump. Once exams are out the way I'll probably take a more serious look at the issue.

Hopefully yours gets resolved and isn't anything major!
