Setteling an argument. Do you think your alfa is a good car?

A fellow forumer on a different forum claims that he has "NEVER met an alfa owner who said there alfa was a good car"

i would like to prove him wrong. certainly i have never met and alfa owner who has said that there alfa was a bad car.

Re: Setteling an argument. Do you think your alfa is a good car?

If you go on general forums there is a big anti-Alfa feeling that is self fuelling. One person posts "should I get an Alfa" and loads of people reply "Oooo no, they rust/breakdown/depreciate, my brother's uncle had one in 1978 and said never again" etc. So then it almost becomes fact that all these people have had Alfas and hated them whereas in reality very few people have actually tried them!

One thing I have noticed though is that people always have an opinion on Alfas. If you go on somewhere like Pistonheads and someone asks about say a Honda, there isn't much response, but if someone asks about an Alfa, loads of people feel the need to stick their oar in!! I've never worked it out, but I like to think lots of people would love to own one, but never quite dare to try it!!

The 159 is amazing. Best car in it's class IMHO. The GT has some amazing elements (performance & practicality).

We've run several later models and they've all been superb. Only let down is dealer experience when getting repairs etc, done

Re: Setteling an argument. Do you think your alfa is a good car?

My 156 is a very good car, but I would still prefer it to be a GTV 3 litre.

If I thought it was a bad car I would have sold it by now.

My 166 is the most comfortable car I have ever travelled in. Ever. And all my Alfa's have been very good all 14 of them.

Couple of niggly bits on my 147JTD (creaky suspension, noisy doors) but on the whole it's been the best car I've had (and that includes a 2.0 Golf). Really love how it drives and looks.

I've now owned my 155 for 11.5 years now, so it can't be that bad a car. And the Bertie is all I'll ever need in a second car

Of all the cars I've owned, my 147 has been the best, wish I could get a GT

Re: Setteling an argument. Do you think your alfa is a good car?

My 145 was a good car
My 156 was a good car
My 166 was problematic because it was a thrashed ex-fleet car.
My 159 is an amazing car and has way more charisma than anything else in the class.

My Audi A4 was dull; my Honda Civic was tinny; my experiences of Mondeos is good but over-rated; I've never driven a Vauxhall I liked; BMWs are for those who can't think for themselves; VW's aren't half as reliable as people would have you believe; Mercedes are soooo plasticky inside; Renaults and Peugeots - what's to consider?

Re: Setteling an argument. Do you think your alfa is a good car?

It's good, not amazing.

Amazing would be.......

I dunno, never owned a car that I class as amazing. Perhaps you need to step up to supercar class to reach that superlative.

Or maybe I have high standards and expectations?

Ours is absolutely outstanding. Started her up last week,(hibernates in the winter ) after the initial piston slack expansion 'takeup', grease circulated in the packed bearings, she sounded like a well oiled sewing machine, as sweet as the proverbial nut!

Re: Setteling an argument. Do you think your alfa is a good car?

When I got my 12 year old alfa 33ti all those years ago, mates said I would regret it and all the usual ****. That was in 1999 and there has been no looking back, all my cars have been Italian and bloody good compared to some of their cars including a new Audi and BMW.

The only weakness I think is the suspension that seems to wear far too early, but that isn't too bad.

Oh yeah, and I still own the 33, which was mothballed to a garage. Never run for five years, only real problem rust as it is an 80's alfa. Can of petrol, new battery and she started a year or so back.

Even after

Pomeo's (2.5 166 manual) snapped timing belt

and

Lacey's (3.0 166 sportronic) burst oil cooler pipes.

I know my alfies are amazing. BUT can only vote once.

Re: Setteling an argument. Do you think your alfa is a good car?

The only truely great car I had was a 1979 MkII Escort.

It ran for 7 years without a hitch and flogged it without losing a penny on the price. The Alfa couldn't didn't last a week before its first random error message, but then there's a lot more to go wrong on the Alfa, the old Escort only had about 3 moving parts.

Re: Setteling an argument. Do you think your alfa is a good car?

I've had nearly 18th months of grin-inducing, trouble free motoring from my GT. My GTV was the same (perhaps I was lucky??). My 164 was a flawed beauty unfortunately (although for the £4k I paid at the time I really, really can't complain!).

I really couldn't contemplate buying any other marque (sub £50k) - apart from maybe a TVR. DOH! I think I just sank my argument

Re: Setteling an argument. Do you think your alfa is a good car?

P.S. this is an argument which will never be settled.

Perhaps the best way to resolve it is to look at the JD Power's survey, which is more thorough and impartial.

I just checked their site: New Vehicle Advisor

It is a bit out of date and only lists the 147 and 156 (!), but selecting only small cars and luxury cars, putting all criteria as maximally important we get the following results:-

1. LEXUS IS200 / 300
2. BMW 5 SERIES
3. TOYOTA COROLLA
4. HONDA CIVIC
5. AUDI A3
6. AUDI A4
7. AUDI A6
8. SUBARU IMPREZA
9. MAZDA 323
10. BMW 3 SERIES
11. MERCEDES-BENZ C-CLASS
12. VOLKSWAGEN GOLF
13. FORD FOCUS
14. VOLKSWAGEN NEW BEETLE
15. VOLVO V70
16. VOLVO S80
17. SEAT LEON
18. VAUXHALL ASTRA
19. NISSAN ALMERA
20. SAAB 9-3
21. VOLVO S60
22. MG ROVER 75 / ZT
23. JAGUAR X-TYPE
24. SUZUKI LIANA
25. HYUNDAI ACCENT
26. SAAB 9-5
27. VAUXHALL OMEGA
28. AUDI A2
29. JAGUAR S-TYPE
30. MERCEDES-BENZ E-CLASS
31. ALFA ROMEO 156
32. PEUGEOT 307
33. KIA RIO
34. RENAULT MÉGANE
35. ALFA ROMEO 147
36. CITROËN XSARA
37. MG ROVER 45 / ZS
38. FIAT STILO

Hmm, not very good, is it?

Maybe I should tweak the settings and re-run the sorting results until it comes up with more palatable results!!!

Re: Setteling an argument. Do you think your alfa is a good car?

It depends on what you would define a "good"?

Build quality - no

Reliability - no

Looks and style - yes

Idividuality - yes

Would I consider another brand.............probably.

It is not impartial and is based more on expectations and dealer service rather than each car on its own merits. Since the Alfa dealers were (are?) crap that had a big impact on the Alfa standings.

It is also not impartial and will only be responded to by people with strong opinions.

for example - Audi ranks alongside Alfa in a mechanical warranty claims survey yet they are higher up the JDPS rankings.

By impartial I mean, not compiled by Alfa fanatics, as our survey is!!!
