Hot Tap - left or right?

A poll with a serious purpose (could be a first for AO)?

On which side are your hot taps in your house?

Mine are random some on the left (bathroom and toilet) but the kitchen is the other way around Cold - left and Hot - right. Its always been confusing even now after living in the house for many years.

Anyway now I must change the taps so want to be consistant. Thinking there must be standard way of doing it, I looked at the internet. But it seems confusion reigns and plumbers around the world tend to do their own thing.

So what is most the common way of doing it?

Re: Hot Tap - left or right?

The best is the shower at our house, the plumber got mixed up so hot is cold and vice versa. I obviously know it, but its interesting when I forget to tell guests.

Re: Hot Tap - left or right?

As an aside, my parents, having lived in their house for about 20 years, had to do some work on the toilet upstairs because the cistern had leaked. Only while doing this did my dad realise that the feed into the cistern was hot water! And the plumber was my grandad. I wonder how much that's added to the heating bill altogether?

Re: Hot Tap - left or right?

Parents had the kitchen redone last year and the fitters were whinging that they would have to swap the taps as the hot should be on the left. I'd like to know who says so

Didn't they notice the 'steaming' from the loo?

Re: Hot Tap - left or right?

I thought that if there was a close and a far tap (like in a bath) then the close tap should be cold?

Am I the only eco warrior who has a right handed tooth brush so that I can save the planet by turning off the cold tap with my left hand?

Please explain ... or is this when the taps are fitted to one corner of the bath?

On our mono block separate taps and mixer taps in our home, the hot is on/towards the left and I do believe that is the norm, afaik

Re: Hot Tap - left or right?

Hot on the left, for me.

In the kitchen, you want cold more often, so that's the tap you operate with your right hand (most peeps being RHD).

In the bathroom it's tricky to take a mouthful of water from the cold tap (to rinse your mouth after brushing) if cold was on the left, so cold is on the right there too.

All our mono-blocs have hot on the left. Except the bath tap.. but as it's a monobloc tap and is in the centre of the long edge of the bath, AND on the edge furthest from the wall (trust me, it doesn't look as weird as it sounds) the hot is on the right (if you were looking at the tap from the normal side) so you turn the lever left (as you look at it) to get HOT.

It's blinking genius .. but unfortunately the natural reaction is to turn the lever to the left (right as you look at it) as your brain susses that you're looking at the tap from the back!

Confused..? Me too!

Re: Hot Tap - left or right?

I think hot is supposed to be on the left, in the same way that the live wire is the brown one; its just the way it is.

That said, all ours are on the right and when I refitted the kitchen I put them in properly but had to change them to the right because everyone was getting confused!

Re: Hot Tap - left or right?

I remember my old dad once put a "cold" tap on the hot pipe and the "hot" tap on the cold pipe.

It took him AGES to get the toolbox out to change the tap heads but by then we'd all got used to the hot tap having the blue markings and the cold having red, so we made him leave it.

Hope the next owners worked it out!

Re: Hot Tap - left or right?

Right it's decided then, I've got to change it with the new taps. Hot taps on the left. It can't be any more confusing than now can it? (Only time will tell.)

Anyway it looks like this job is cancelled until after Christmas now. I didn't fancy playing with corroded threads that havn't been touched in decades and the wife now won't have anything disrupting Christmas. Can't say I'm sorry. I've done enough plumbing this year, but that was all straight-forward. Just putting all new radiators and pipe-work in leaving a Corgi installer to put the boiler in. Somehow I would rather do that than play with the old pipework, putting new taps in, where something is sure to go wrong.

Re: Hot Tap - left or right?

On the hot feed to loos thing, I remember reading that in some colder countries this is normal practice to avoid condensation issues, and cracked cisterns. The very cold mains feed onto nice warm ceramic can crack it. Use a hot feed to your loo to reduce condensation and risk of cracking.

Suppose it might make the cistern and loo cleaner too, afterall you use hot water to clean with!
