Should OPs have the right to close threads?

I accept that sometimes a thread is better off closed, if becoming offensive or bullying etc., but this should be decided by the mods. I can't see why the thread starter should have this power.
What do you think?

Yes

or

No

?

If I think a thread of mine has become 'unnecessary' I ask for it to be closed, if a mod agrees with my request it is closed and end of.

The OP should not have the power to close a thread without the agreement of a mod IMO

Why not?
If the OP feels that the thread has lost its way it seems like the obvious thing to me.

If you are prepared to start something then you should be prepared for the consequences there off.

If i had one wish it would be hindsight, thereby i would never make mistakes and never learn anything the hard way.

Presumably there is a discussion between the OP and mods before a
thread is closed. I would have thought that 'I'm bored with it now'
is not a sufficient reason but 'It's gone way away from my original
concept due to mischief on the behalf of certain members' is fair
enough, or 'I can see that the direction it is now taking is causing
unnecessary offence to some members' is another.

At the same time, members other than an OP who has his/her thread
closed are more than free to start a new thread on the same subject
if they feel the discussion has legs. If they believe there are posts
within the original thread that are pertinent to the discussion they
could link to the closed thread.

I would be against members having the ability to close a thread without
refering to a moderator. Can this be done at the moment? If so I was
not aware of that and in seven years have never felt the need to have
a thread of mine closed. Moderators have

Would have to vote 'other' - I believe the OP has the right, but not on a 'whim'

I answer 'Yes' the OP should have the right to end a discussion by closing their thread. If the OP feels the thread has come to a natural end or is sick of bickering or the thread being hijacked then they should have the right to say "Enough is enough, the end"

If people want to carry on an arguement they will probably open a new thread anyway just to have the last word

maybe I should have been clearer, but it does say 'on a whim' in the question so you can safely vote NO.

I agree with this. In the case referred to in my OP, there seemed no reason for the thread to be closed other than a request from the OP. No reasons were given by the mod. It was then pointed out to me that this is a 'right' of the OP to have the thread closed purely on the grounds of having started it and for no other reason.

We should all have the 'right' to ask for a thread to be closed, and maybe the OP's opinion should carry a little extra weight with mods' decision making, but I don't think closure should be automatically granted without good reason(s) being given.
