Windows Browser
So, the EU has finally forced Micro$oft to offer users a choice of browsers.
Bit late, but the "Browser Choice" should have installed on your PC today.
Are you switching?
Or have you already?

At least it's better than what they were forcing them to do, one of the beta's of windows 7 was an eu image that came with no browser installed. I mistakenly downloaded it loaded it on to a laptop and found that I pretty much couldn;t do **** all because I had no browser.
I couldn't even download a browser because there was no browser, imagine how frustrating that would have been for individuals with one computer.
It was like great windows 7, yeah baby yeah, right oh screen res not right need drivers DOH!

Microsoft IE at work (no choice), but use Chrome at home. Don't dislike IE but feel chrome is faster to load pages.

I have mostly used FF for a good while now - still use IE forra quick google search (differing home pages)
Use Opera mini on my phone, which is faster than anything else I have tried
Tis about time MS were told not to attempt to take over folks entire lives

I have never been Micro$oft's biggest fan, and IE is IMHO a piece of ****. However firefox is becoming as big and bloated as IE over the last couple of years, so I am starting to lose the faith. Chrome is nice and light and works well with AO

We use Chrome and firefox. I have Opera mini on the phone.
I used IE for ebay listings, Chrome doesn't like the self hosting images.

IE is fine but it is so exploited by hackers and unfortunately there are still a lot of websites out there that only display properly on IE.
I use FF or Chrome, Opera seems ok too.

I don't get it. In what way did users not already have a choice?
If we didn't have a choice, how come I use Firefox?
Or are they saying that Microsoft have to release Windows with more than one browser already installed? How does that help anyone?

It is not actually possible to uninstall IE. It was incorporated into the O/S in such a way that the PC cannot actually function without it. A clever trick on Microsoft's part. That's the root of the issue in question that has taken many years to resolve.

been using firefox for years, always found it much more immune from nasty net stuff
still have to use IE for some sites, mainly corporate work-related ones. definitely wouldn't use it for trawling grot sites though

Microsoft forced OEMs to never pre-install another browser.
Thus by default they had an advantage via general apathy.
From now are you are to be presented with a choice of browsers
when you start the machine for the first time or install Windows.
Bit late really. This should have happened 10 years ago.

So you'll have lots of things which you have no intention of using installed on your computer?
How very helpful.

Opera on the phone is the business.
I want to ditch XP off my Vaio.
May try to install Android or Chrome OS at some point.
(Or maybe just Phoenix's Hyperspace and leave the XP install...)

So if they're not installed, how do you get hold of them? You can't download them - no browser!
It gets right on my nerves when monopoly commisions make problems where they don't exist in this manner. The point of their existence is to ensure the end user isn't getting shafted, but what bleedin' difference does this, doubtless massively expensive, ruling make to anyone?
A case in point is stopping any media outlet having a monopoly on premiership football. Brilliant. If they hadn't stepped in, I could have had everything with just my sky subscription. Thanks to their stellar help, I have to subscribe to three different services. They've made things worse for the people they're supposed to be serving.

I disagree. What Microsoft did back in the 90s
and continued to do even after destroying the browser market
was unforgivable and illegal. It stifled technology and
hampered the growth of internet use for years.
They should be punished.
You don't need a browser to download stuff.
