Assisted Suicide

Well, as this is a subject of debate at the moment, what do we all think on here? Should we change to law to allow assisted suicide in certain circumstances such as deteriorative medical conditions? Should you be allowed to top yourself if you want to anyway? Rather oddly it is illegal, though a tough crime to punish if you were successful!

Or is the whole idea an abomination and contrary to nature or god or whatever you believe in?

I believe it should be allowed - am not going to enter a moral / ethical / religious arguement over it though

I believe it should be allowed in cases where a person is terminally ill and they cannot do it themselves.

You wouldn't let an animal suffer so why should a human be allowed to?

Helping a heathy person kill themselves is wrong though. If they want to die they can do it themselves..

Religion should not play any part in this discussion. I simply would want the right to die with dignity.

I believe that there should be the option to end ones life if they believe this is what they want.

However as was put forward last night by Terry Pratchett, it should not be done for trivial reasons, this option should only allowed when there is no medical option for cure

If i was suffering an illness that meant i would suffer until the end of my days then i would take this option, i would hate for my family to remember me as someone who withered away racked with pain/disability etc. and frequently this happens.

Likewise i don't think this option of assisted suicide should be seen as a way of 'offloading' elderly members of the family when they become a burden.

The stories that have been in the press over the last few years cover a number of different scenarios, some of which i could agree with and other i couldn't....

My only concern comes when a person suffers from an illness/disability who cannot communicate effectively but yet may be mentally astute, how wuld they then communicate their wishes, or object to their relatives wishes?

Religion shouldn't enter the debate. If YOUR religion prevents YOU from doing it that's fine and dandy but I don't think I have (or anyone else has) the right to tell others that they shouldn't do things because of MY beliefs.

Death is a release for someone in unimaginable pain or misery - it's a no-brainer! Legalising euthanasia will ease the suffering of both patients and their families.

not only should it be allowed you should be able to choose how you die, gloria huniford could then say worried about bills or funeral expenses after you die why not take out a policy with us and we'll turn your death into a snuff film and feed you corpse to the lions at chester zoo to pay for your funeral

I'm not going to go deeply into my views, but I agree to it on medical grounds. My mother has already spoke to me about such a thing, and I wouldn't refuse her such a wish. Everyone has the right to a dignified death. That right (and dignity) should NOT be dictated to us.
