In a previous incarnation, I was an historian. Political history may be more kind to her, although her goverment's 'efforts' in Northern Ireland may not stand up to scrutiny, and she left an economy teetering on the edge.
However, trust me when I say that Social History will view her very, very differently. Apart from a few pockets of the country which did well, such as the South-East, and a couple of the more monied cities, there are areas of the country which were absolutely decimated, and that will not be forgotten. You try to find a Thatcher sympathiser in Wales or Scotland
I don't buy the 'bitter medicine' argument, I'm sorry. If you have a community which is reliant on one industry (one mine, one factory, etc), you don't just shut it down, then tell the community to 'stop f***ing moaning, we're making a packet'. A good government would put something in place first, then start shutting down the old industry. It is possible to do - it just takes some effort. They managed in Corby, so why not elsewhere?
Council houses - my area, again, is now suffering b/c of her short-term gain politics. This is a rural area, with lots of small villages. Most villages had a street of council houses. These were mostly sold off in the 80s (my uncle did very well, he bought his for a song) - but now where does that leave us? High demand for housing and limited housing stock has led to high house prices - a tiny semi-detached is still worth around £100k. What do young people do, they grow up in a village, maybe work locally, but where to live? No more council houses means they have to try to rent privately (really hard and expensive here) or try and buy one of those housing schemes houses (you know the type, buy half and the local authority buy the other half). Not bad in theory, but, in practice, they are not regulated as highly as the old council houses were, so people are getting hold of them as 2nd homes, etc. Soooooo- young people are moving away, the populations of these villages is aging quickly, and it's causing all sorts of social and economic problems.
My god people have got short memories, the legacy she left - the early-mid 1990s, in this area were absolutely awful, I remember them well
