britain was a complete and utter mess by the end of the 70's so thank god we had a pm with the cojones to take the country by the scruff of its neck and drag it kicking and screaming into the real world.

of course i feel sorry for the people who lost their jobs in the 80's but they were all on borrowed time anyway, at least thatcher delivered an economy that was viable and which generated new jobs in viable industries. if labour had stayed in power the guys who lost their jobs down the mines etc would still be on the bloody dole queue now as there would be no jobs for them to look for

like cloverleaf says, thatcher was the medicine not the illness. and we all know the worse the medicine tastes, the better it works

Re: Thatcher State Funeral?

It certainly seems as if most people either love Maggie or hate her. There isn't much in between. She quite clearly didn't care all that much and I doubt if she really cares if she gets a state funeral or not. She is written into our history and that will be sufficient for her. It's all most politicians can hope for. Very very few are remembered for being good. Most are remembered for what they got wrong.

Re: Thatcher State Funeral?

i didn't love thatcher, she clearly rubbed an awful lot of people up the wrong way but i certainly admire her for her courage (or stubborn-ness, whatever you wanna call it )

as for the funeral i'm really not bothered either way, but watching a bunch of students who weren't even born when she was in power heckle the ceremony will be quite hilarious

Re: Thatcher State Funeral?

Those students and other young people heckling at her funeral, will be the ones who cannot get a council house now.

Because she gave them away/sold them for less than they cost to build to buy votes.

Those people that bought houses then are now quids in to buy second homes, and that pushes the prices up for private homes as well.

I might as well play the part now.)
Not aware I have lost any points Nev; are you keeping score then ? Sorry if I embarrassed you by reminding you of your earlier posts, but I can only quote what you actually said…..

Now, what are you alleging with regard to the number of posts I have made on this thread ?!? (It’s rather sad by the way that you feel the need to actually review what I have posted on – you really do need to get out more, and stop watching all that trash TV which is poisoning your brain…Do you happen to be Welsh, by any chance ? )

I can only guess that perhaps you fear I am part of some dastardly David Cameron plot to flood Alfa forums with pro Conservative propaganda ?? Is that it, is that what you are so worried about ?? If so, you are moving from conspiracy theories to outright paranoia !!!

That really shouldn’t be dignified with a response, however, just to ensure you are sleeping soundly at night, may I reassure you that I am not, and never have been, a member of any political party, and I am not and never have been in the employ of any political party.

The truth, as with all conspiracy theories, is a bit more mundane I’m afraid; I am just a humble Alfisti who happens to have a keen interest in politics and current affairs.

I hope that has reassured you. Now, just be very careful with your response Nev, as you never know who might be monitoring your internet traffic…..Oh, and you know all those innocent looking blue Mondeos you keep spotting in your rear view mirror ? Well, I’d keep a close eye on them if I were you…….

Who in their right mind actually wants a council house ?
Have some ambition, please.....

Not everyone can afford to rent privately or buy.

Especially nowadays when property prices are so grossly inflated in relation to people salaries.

People need homes to live in, some people are (and it will be alien to you ) not fortunate enough to be able to afford a mortgage, and what are you saying about council houses ?? what about the people that bought their council houses ?? they still live in council houses in council estates ?? what about the younger generation trying to get their first house ? that cant afford it and cant get a council house ? Greed is only good when your rolling in it

What I am saying is that council houses are owned by the council. If someone has bought one, they own it rather than rent it, and by definition it is owner occupied rather council owned; in other words an ex-council house.....
There is nothing greedy about people wanting to own thier own homes; I'd take a stab in the dark that you do yourself ? Does that make you a "greedy Thatcherite" ??

Yes I own my house, thats because there was no alternative and I am fortunate to be able to afford it, however I dont believe that the answer to the housing shortage was to sell all the council stock and do away with the only means that working class people had of putting a roof over their families heads at a reasonable rent. So whats the answer then Cleverleaf ? answer my previous post without posing a question

Re: Thatcher State Funeral?

people who can't afford to buy their own place and are still waiting for a council house usually qualify for (taxpayer-funded) housing benefit which will enable them to rent privately, so nobody is priced out of a place to live if they don't want to be

the house next door to us is rented out (£950 a month) and is currently occupied by a family with 6 children. the father works in a factory (on presumably a modest salary) and the mother doesn't work (presumably because she has her hands more than full with 6 children to look after).

so thatcher obviously created such a horrible, greedy capitalist state that families on low incomes could never have a hope in hell of living in a nice house in an expensive upmarket suburb...

oh no, hang on.... i've just remembered my neighbours

So she created a housing shortage and a system where the taxpayer now funds private rents for those that cant afford a mortgage ? Great Idea !!

Re: Thatcher State Funeral?

Seems that some people consider themselves fortunate to be ble to afford to buy a house whilst others are clearly greedy rather than fortunate

Re: Thatcher State Funeral?

The greed is expecting people on £6 an hour to be able to afford a mortgage, there was a time the goverment used taxes to help those less fortunate, That seems to be an urban myth now though
