The steel industry succumbed to market forces. It was unprofitable in the face of foreign competition. It only survives now because it concentrates on high quality steel and if I'm not mistaken is Indian owned ?
Likewise shipbuilding, if you dont get orders you can't make ships. Japan was building them faster better and quicker. QED

The TR7 plant in Merseyside closed because workers believed the empty promises of the unions and were convinced the govt would bale them out and satisfy their greed. They didn't, and the rest is history.
BL, The greatest and most mis-managed car company ever, needed little help collapsing, it owed millions in loans and was being strangled by working practices that if I described them here you would not believe me.
Thatcher took a grip of this country and turned it around following the appalling Labour years that left this country in debt to the IMF for billions. Rightly or wrongly she gave the country it's pride back (though the Falklands Conflict). And the country to the people if anyone is to blame for problems that have since arised it is a minority of our own country men who exploited the system for their own ends.
.
I suppose that was the view of middle England at the time, however I wonder if the communities that were destroyed (yes remember communities where people looked out for each other ) would share those views, and I wont defend the unions either (Scargill and co were off their heads ), I stand by my original post. Thatcher and her cronies were the start of the greed nation which was then followed by New Labour and now we will all pay for it.
Anyway I dont know why I am not thanking her, If it wasnt for her selling off public transport I would not be doing what im doing now. Thanks Maggie

Re: Thatcher State Funeral?
Hi guys. So, what's all this about how good Thatcher was for this country? Closing down and selling off all our industry was a good thing??? On which planet would that be? So, it was all a complete shambles but wouldn't it have been far better to, you know, put it right, rather than just kill it? Oh, I have a wart on my finger, I'd better cut my arm off.
Did you know how much money the UK would have saved if we'd paid every islander one million quid to resettle somewhere else in the world and let Argentina have it? Just think of all those lives saved too! But, oh no, we need a toe hold in the South Atlantic so we can have a piece of Antartic pie, whatever that's worth. Oh, and take everyone's minds off what a p*** poor state the Uk's in so the old bag gets voted in again (plus a few millions to Sharky and Sharky for slagging-off the opposition).
I also hold Thatcher responsible for the "f*** you" society in the UK today, too many people got too rich too quick, money grew on trees. Then it all fell on it's rear end, everyone's hocked up to the eyeballs and you daren't park your new Alfa out in the steet in case someone runs a key down the side. "I want better than you but I can't afford it so I'll destroy what you have instead". This doesn't happen anywhere else in the world and it certainly didn't happen before 1978.
Burry her in the garden under the tree like a dog, just like Milosevic. Preferably while she's still breathing.
Sorry, only came on here to research a 156

Re: Thatcher State Funeral?
Too many people with short memories, either that or too young to have any memories of the late 70's.
While the lefty fashionable revisionists always spout on about Mrs T "destroying" industries, communities etc, the truth is somewhat inconveniently different.
Our so called industries were in fact complete basket cases for many years, overmanned, uncompetitive, run by the unions for the unions, and only still in existence due to massive state (ie taxpayer) subsidies. Or in other words, Labour job creation schemes.
All Mrs T did was pull the plug on the state aid and let market forces take their course. People who criticise that don't understand the difference between the desease and the medicine .
Yes a lot of people lots their jobs, and yes that was sad, but those jobs should have gone years ago, and were only artificially propped up by years of Labour subsidy. It's a bit like criticising a surgeon for chopping your leg off after you have let it go septic.
The UK was a complete basket case in 1979, and it hadn't been for Mrs T none of us would be able to afford an Alfa now, we would be rivalling Albania for being the poorest country in Europe.

17% interest rates, Poll Tax, Riots, Prison Breakouts and Roof-Top Protests, Abolition of free school milk and prescription charges. All under which government, let me think............
Who mentioned short memories?
By the by, I stand by what I said. I cannot abide that woman and not one penny should be spent from public coffers on her.

Re: Thatcher State Funeral?
Not to mention 4 million+ unemployed, Brixton/Toxteth riots, unnecessary war to deflect public opinion and gain another election victory, a cat's dinner made out of the Northern Ireland situation, corruption/sleaze, tea and crumpets with Pinochet, arms deals with <insert your favourite crazed dictator here>, etc, etc,
I may be younger than you, but I do have a brain, and an interest in politics. Your argument that it was worse in the 70s, so she did the right thing, is a) debatable, and b) akin to stripping the carcass of a ailing company, keeping the meat for yourself and your friends, and leaving the bones for the vultures. Except that this was no company, it was a country, my country, and I won't forgive her, or her mates, for doing that.

No, it's like critisizing your GP for cutting off your anti-biotics supply and laughing when your leg falls off.
There was much wrong with British industry, that's obvious, but killing it off rather than fixing it is myopic in the expreme.
So, what does Britain make now? What essential product do we export to the rest of the world? What are we world leaders in? All the money's borrowed kiddo; imports outnumber exports by a staggeringly vast amount, the UK owes everyone billions and sooner or later they'll call in the debts and the UK's going to sink into the Atlantic.
Sorry guys, looks like I'm stuck with the grandad-mobile for the forseeable future, unless some kind soul destroys it for me...

Errrr...prescription charges were brought in by a Labour Government
Abolition of free school milk, prison breakouts ??? Who cares ?!?
And if you are into quoting stats; 25% inflation anyone ? Or how about uncollected refuse rotting in the streets for weeks ? Or the dead left unburied ? The UK in 1978/9 was banana republic time.
