Idea Does Alfa Romeo need a proper GT replacement?

I've been thinking. As good as the GT is it's a bit long in the tooth now

When Clare comes to change hers, there's nothing in the current line up (inc. MiTo) to tempt her to stay with Alfa

Her car is a business tool so always carries luggage and often three or more people. Hence the Brera's out and she doesn't want the same as me.

How about a sleek, 2 door, 4 seater Bertone bodied Coupe based on the standard length 159 platform, just like the GT is based on the 156 SW

Kind of and Alfa Pug 407 (which I really like)

Please back up your vote with discussion

Re: Does Alfa Romeo need a proper GT replacement?

I'm kinda on the fence here (splinters...)I don't reckon flooding the market with loads of different classes of cars would enhance Alfa's reputation.
Surely Clare fancies an 8C ?

Just noticed she'll have passengers, just let her pick the most important one!!

Re: Does Alfa Romeo need a proper GT replacement?

Get rid of the transmission tunnel
from the Brera and have reclinable
back seats. Maybe stretch the midsection
by 3 inches.

Ditch Skyview and have a tilt 'n' slide
out metal sunroof.

Put a turbo or supercharged 2.0l engine
with about 230BHP and Bob's your father's brother.

Never realy liked the GT, not that I'd say "no" to one and I think the Brera looks so much nicer all round. Sorry GT owners.

maybe a slight face-lift - but no way kill it off.

imo the GT outshines the brera already

Re: Does Alfa Romeo need a proper GT replacement?

Other...

It's a great idea in principle but Alfa have already missed the boat with this one.

The 159/Brera and 8C were all developed around the same time and Alfa must have had a forward plan then for what their future range would look like.

I think that the Brera should have been developed as a replacement for the GT (pretty much as per Nev's suggestion posted above) and the 8C should have been a stand-alone range topper, albeit down specced for series production rather than being a limited edition, and priced to compete with the lower Porsche 911s. The Brera in its current form would not exist in my master plan, sorry no offence Brera owners!

The problem with Alfa developing another GT now would be that they would continue to confuse the buying public (as well as some sections of the press) about the roles of the two cars, both coupes.

Re: Does Alfa Romeo need a proper GT replacement?

The Brera is the GTV replacement and playing in a different league than the GT (the Brera 2.2 had roughly the same price tag as the GT 3.2).

The GT didn't replace anything and is a 156 based coupe with a 147 dahsboard. The GT is even longer than a 156. What Alfa needs to do imho is to create a new GT based on the 149 and make it a bit smaller / shorter. And powered with nice small yet powerful petrol turbo engines (and JTDs of course)

Re: Does Alfa Romeo need a proper GT replacement?

I think they do. I like the car but dont think the GT badge should apply to it. Why would Alfa name a car a GT with such a lack of performance?

GT stands for Grand Tourer - comfort with some performance. GT's are not sports cars.

Yeah I quite like that it's a bit Citroen-y isn't it! Exactly how a GT should look.

I wasn't referring to small powerless engines. But to small powerfull turbo engines. Take the 1.8 Turbo engine we are going to get in the Mi.To for instance. With 230 bhp you can hardly call that lack of performance

Spot on...a smaller 'sportier' coupe would clean up as there's not much competition out there at the mo....

Re: Does Alfa Romeo need a proper GT replacement?

i'm surprised alfa haven't already done some kind of 159 coupe when you consider how many 3-series coupes/A5's and CLKs get sold by ze germans

@squadrone - not sure about the 407 coupe, it's a bit barge-like with those mahooosive overhangs at either end. the 406 coupe on the other hand was (and still is) an absolute honey of a car, grazie signore pininfarina

as for the GT i still think it's a great looking car but the interior is beginning to show its age
