Re: Handbrake And/Or Gears ?

Handbrake and in gear on an incline.
In gear only on the flat - especially in the winter!

What RicksAlfas said. And I'm the only one out of all my mates that parks my cars in gear (22 y.o.).

Re: Handbrake And/Or Gears ?

Handbrake. Unless on a gradient in which case:
handbrake + gear + curbed tyre.

If visiting San Francisco: It's the law to curb
and they do issue tickets if you don't.

Re: Handbrake And/Or Gears ?

I never park in gear because i hate the way the selespeed starts when in 1st or reverse. I always park in N and let it swear at me when i switch it off.

Re: Handbrake And/Or Gears ?

Only leave it in gear if on a bit of a slope - especially if it's a nasty one

Re: Handbrake And/Or Gears ?

I try to remember to leave the handbrake off in the winter, but don't always succeed. It was only ever a really serious problem in my company Astra, many years ago, and my Audi A4 anyway.

Re: Handbrake And/Or Gears ?

A driver of many, many old cars - I can't get out of the habit of parking in gear, with the handbrake on

But I always check the box before turning the key - that's a habit too!

After experiencing handbrake failure - handbrake, 1st gear, chocks, bungees, cardboard boxes, external airbags, prayer book etc

Always hand brake on and in gear. Never know. My friend has a 55 Vectra and has had bother with using just the hand brake. Car rolled off their drive during (luckily) the night. She was told by the mechanic that they've had a few problems with this but Vauxhall / Dealer refused said no prob.

An old but true story here.

A friend had a newish Cavalier back in the early 90's. His drive had a steep slope leading down to the garage so he always drove the car on to the drive front end first and left it in reverse, handbrake on or off I either don't know or can't remember. ( Sure that brain cells leak out of my ears when I'm sleeping. ) Anyway he was working in his garage one evening with the doors closed when he heard the car start up and immediately drive off, closely followed by a bang. Thinking that Mrs M had driven the car and run into something he went out for a look. The car had started itself up and reversed off the drive, over the road and into a concrete fence post.

There followed months of hassle with insurance and Vauxhall who finally admitted to a " known " problem with the wiring and, eventually, they footed all the bills for the bodywork, car wiring mod and the council owned fence post.

Does this cautionary tale change anyones mind on their procedure ?

Not me and although I may yet regret it I usually park with just the car in gear and handbrake off. ( C'mon, I live in Lincolnshire and have very bad memories of fixing, or trying to, Sud and Alfetta handbrakes. ) In circumstances unusual to me I occasionally do use the handbrake in the GTV and am always surprised that it actually works, unlike the older Alfas I've owned !

The last service my company vectra went through, the spring on the handbrake was upgraded for free!
They made a point of telling me as apparently Watchdog did an investigation into vectra hand brakes that released by themselves!

Hand brake and in gear always

Re: Handbrake And/Or Gears ?

Handbrake and in gear. A friend of mine always does this, he explained it's so that no one can come and tow his car away to nick it... seems like a bit of paranoia, but you can't be too careful

Re: Handbrake And/Or Gears ?

I'm too lazy to take it out of gear when I stop ... and equally lazy putting it in gear when I get back in the car!!!

Re: Handbrake And/Or Gears ?

For a short period, both but gear depending on the incline (first if on the flat or sloping backwards, reverse is facing down wards.

Longer term (all weekend or on holiday in garage) in gear only
