Wine? Which Country?
What is the country of origin for the majority of the wine
you consume?
Fairly obvious for me. But I do miss some of
the variety that a non-wine producing country
gives you.

Excuses, excuses ! I'm bored and need something to engage me, Forum's a bit quiet right now, almost had to go and polish some shoes !
Another disappointment for you. I prefer the New World wines, USA and South America. Also like the Cyprus plonk, St Pandemonium and the ilk !
You can tell that I am no connoisseur but not really found a lot of French stuff that's even drinkable, at least for what I'm prepared pay. A friend reckoned he had the answer - the French keep all the best stuff for themselves and export the rest !

Re: Wine? Which Country?
The Spanish stuff is generally good value for money, a couple of decent S.A. wines are available in the supermarkets for less than a tenner. We drink quite a bit of Italian Pino Grigio, which is nice and not too pricey. The only occasions I had any decent Australian wine its been well over the £20 mark. I certainly don't pretend to be an expert, but its good to keep trying!

Re: Wine? Which Country?
I love the wine from the Okanagan in BC. Otherwise, Spain, US, Chile, SA.

Re: Wine? Which Country?
Was listening to a wine critic about two years ago, and he was saying that Coutnries such as France, Italy and now to an extent here in South Africa, have a big problem. This being that traditional wines that are classed by the grape they use, no longer taste like the wines originally made. He mentioned a specific one as an example (It's quite a while ago) that is made in Italy.
Tradionally eaten with pasta this wine was a sweet, fruity, slightly fizzy wine. (Almonst like a monis grape juice) yet if you where to harvest and produce a wine from these grapes today, you will get a very dry wine. The vineyards are all very old, and have changed what they produce.
He mentioned that the "New Generation" of wine makers are the movers and the shakers, as they are moving away from the stiff upper lip you need to drink X while eating Y club, and are mixing grape types to obtain new fresh types of wine. Wine makers here in Durbanville, and in New Zealand where especially high on his list.
So if you still like your cabernet sauvignon, thats fine, if you are mad enough to like a pinnotage then thats also ok, but it is no longer taboo to have mixed wines. They seem to be the everyday wine going forward, and the only ones drinking the pure blends, are the purists, even though they are no longer the wine that was originally blended 300 years ago.

Re: Wine? Which Country?
Must say I was partial to a bit SA and Auz wine in the UK
especially as it was all pretty cheap at the time in the UK.
These days it's as expensive as anything else.
And you'd be pushed to find it in shops here.
(And it'd be way more than the 10-20 Euros you pay
for some most excellent French stuff.)
Never got along with US stuff. Too young, mostly
like drinking grape juice, although had an excellent bottle
of Frog's Leap 2005 Cab Sav which went down well with
a hugh steak in New York.

Re: Wine? Which Country?
I mostly stick with the local stuff. Ontario has a wide variety of wine regions and wineries.
Ontario's wine regions are right in the middle of the northern grape-growing belt – between 41° and 44° north. You may find it hard to believe, but that puts southern Ontario just south of the famous Bordeaux Region in France, and parallel with northern California wine regions.
Wines of Ontario : Wine Council of Ontario : Ontario Wine Route
If I'm going order something from out of the province, it's typically from Germany.
