I want a BMW......NOT!

Why do so many people aspire to own a BMW?

I have never understood why?

It can't be the styling because they are bloody ugly.

I can honestly say that I will never buy one.

What do other people think?

Re: I want a BMW......NOT!

Do people own them/pay for them with their own
cash or are they just mostly fleet rep-mobiles?

Re: I want a BMW......NOT!

I nearly made this exact decision.

The only alternative to Alfa that I was willing to drive. Have a Merc loaner at the moment and it's ok. Drove an Audi last year and really didn't like it.

The BMs are very good cars dynamically and if you'd had the problems i'd had the last 18 months with Alfa, then I can assure you that the BM option was the only one left.

Styling aint nice, but dynamically very good indeed.

In fact I'll be sat in the driving seat of a few tomorrow.

I'm experiencing deja vu and amnesia at the same time.. I think I've forgotten this before.

Re: I want a BMW......NOT!

They are good cars dynamically i suppose. For me it probably comes down to the styling and the negative connotations associated with their drivers.

Its strange because I have no such problems with Audi's and Mercs.

But there we are. Each to there own I suppose.

Re: I want a BMW......NOT!

They just don't do anything for me..
My brother has a Z3, and while I enjoyed driving it a couple of times. I could never bring myself to buy one..
I find most BMW drivers to be some of the worst on the road, with a definite chip on there shoulder. That's just IMHO though

What Hunter says. If there were no Alfas they would probably be the next option (although I do like the new Merc C-class).

Saabs, which used to be a viable alternative, are just white-goods now

My father in law likes his Saabs. At least they are a bit different from the norm. But he a mature fellow!

I think if it wasn't Alfa i would have to choose Audi but not the hideous Q7.

Re: I want a BMW......NOT!

Have had a few BM's, over the years, the early ones were fun to drive as they had real problems with rear end slide especially in the wet. All the new ones look the same very Germanic. Give m,e a bit of Italian flair and styling anytime.

Re: I want a BMW......NOT!

BMW's problem at the moment is dodgy styling throughout the range but then you shouldn't employ an American chief designer . The 3 series coupe is not bad, though. Also can't argue with the power/economy/emissions, especially the diesels. No-one else gets near them in that respect. Pity they're driven by tw&ts, eh?

Re: I want a BMW......NOT!

I never join in the BMW-bashing. I used to have an M3, and that was great fun to drive. Gorgeous looking, too

I prefer my Alfas though.

Hey, just think - if there was no such thing as BMW, all those BMW drivers would be looking for cars, and they might end up in Alfas

Re: I want a BMW......NOT!

There are plenty of people with both on here. Like Red and White wine, both good, but for different reasons. Not worth fighting about really.

I love my Alfa more than the Bim, but from a dispassionate point of view there is one clear winner.

I like Beemers!-not as good looking as Alfas, very true but I do like the overall quality of the cars plus the good aftersales service.

Re: I want a BMW......NOT!

I bought mine 'cos it was RWD, and they are drivers cars, it was also 9 years old at the time, and parts (from eurocarparts) were dirt cheap.
I still struggle to control FWD cars, and yearn for RWD..

Re: I want a BMW......NOT!

I think most are just company cars. That said, a guy near me was selling his 57 plate 5 series diesel a little while ago. I stopped to have a look and he comes running out of his house like his arse was on fire to try and talk me into it. He saw my 147 parked up and enquired what it was like to live with and said that i had seen the light. Wasnt going to be drawn into a long discussion about how reliable BMW's are over Alfa's so told him it was a ton more exciting than what he was selling and walked back to my car. He did sell it, which surprises me as he was asking £22,000 for it. I wonder what he was offered.
