Chilling These Past Weeks I Have Been Mostly Driving A.......

2008 Mercedes C Class 200k with AMG Body Kit.

Neither ARUK or Mangoletsi could give me an Alfa, so they eventually swapped the billy basic Focus hire car for this Merc and he's my brief 1300 mile report.

Good points:
Looks - The AMG body kit, alloys, cross drilled brakes all look the part. Fat alloys/tyres at the back finish off the looks very well.

Seats - the most adjustable and comfortable 1/2 leather AMG seats I've sat in for a while. Held me in all the right places without feeling cramped. Suited my driving style perfectly.

Stereo - Sound quality is far better than my 159 standard setup.

Exterior paint finish - no swirl marks, no orange peel, no difference in colour from plastic to steel substrates, no stone chips - very good surface generally and this car has covered over 11k miles now.

The full auto boot opening function on the fob is a nice touch - same as our CLS.

The 'follow me home' headlights, auto folding mirrors and mirror mounted LED repeaters are good too.

Steering - direct, good feeling and lots of feedback.

Brakes - had a little 'play' from high speed a few times and they were faultless. Sharp at low speed but great overall.

Chassis and sports suspension solid as a rock. Hammered it down my fav road and it gave me similar levels of feedback albeit in a different way to my 159.

Rear wheel drive and adjustable throttle settings were great fun in recent damp weather

Not so good points:

Firstly it stank of cigars - not a great start

Gearbox - It's frankly awful. 5 speed paddle shift tiptronic automatic. It's so bloody slowwwww to change up or down, changes gear when you least want to (around a tight bend for example!) and slushes through every cog. Even kickdown takes an age. Nasty nasty nasty.

Engine - It's ok, not great though. Good top end and above 70mph but the low end shove is appalling and muted. Not helped by the nasty gearbox. I drove a manual version of this engine in comfort trim a few months ago and pretty impressed.
The one good thing about the engine was, no matter how much punishment I gave it, I couldn't get under 31-32mpg! Very impressive IMHO.

Plastics - Some of the plastics were cheap and very hard/shiney. Not good in a £27kish car.

The wing mirrors, LED lights aside are big and ugly slabs of plastic. Look like Prince Charles' ears....

Bluetooth - Good to see its not just Alfa who have issues with bluetooth connections. For the love of god, I couldn't get it to connect with either of my mobiles. Crap system. Hence the TomTom emergency microphone in the photos.

Positioning of the flappy paddles was stupid. You'd have thought that after over a thousand miles in a car I be used to using them, but no. I can't remember how many people Ive flashed by mistake, so close is the stalk to the flappy paddle down shift thingy. Maddening

Overall a 7.0/10 and I'm quite impressed (aside from the gearbox). A very different car to the 159, but worth a look once this new model have started to filter into the nearly new market.

It's a solid car and capable of refined high speed motorway munching with an understated style.

I'm experiencing deja vu and amnesia at the same time.. I think I've forgotten this before.

Saw a red Sport close-up at the weekend and though it looked pretty damned good. Not very keen on the interior though and that would probably be enough to put me off.

Yes, as functional as the interior is, it does leave a lot to be desired in the 'style' front.

I guess we're all so used to flair and eccentric design cues with Alfa.

The dash is quite 'slabby' but solid. The dials are very clear but slightly dull to look at. The cruise control function back lighting is quite natty though.

Oh forgot to mention how HUGE the steering wheel feels! Not ideal in a 'sporting saloon'

Big enough cars all right. Merc's really to take well to be left in D and just go. Not really a mad drivers car. But that one looks well.

Nice write up too.

Re: These Past Weeks I Have Been Mostly Driving A.......

I was in my friend's C200 the other day... it was silence in there compare to my 156... and the entertainment computer thingy was so hard to use... took us quite a while to work out how to get the ipod connected... Althou the suspension felt quite firm... should be a nice car to drive..

Re: These Past Weeks I Have Been Mostly Driving A.......

Yes it's fairly quiet but no more so than the 159.

The wind noise at over 90mph is more than my 159 actually. Obviously on a private road mi'lud

I have no doubt that the Merc would reach the 146mph V-max

Nice review Hunter

How does the price compare to a similarly specc'd 159?

Re: These Past Weeks I Have Been Mostly Driving A.......

181bhp and 181lbs of torque? is it unusual for those stats to match (no a criticism, just observation/question).

I just can't get on with the looks. From the rear esp imho, it looks like one of the previous generation Accords (the one they based the Type R on).

I dunno, BMW, Audi and Merc obviously get their gearing better than Alfa. Becasue the AR's usually have far better P/W ratios and, apparently, are outgunned according to the figures. Some massaging going on maybe?

Re: These Past Weeks I Have Been Mostly Driving A.......

It is also worth comparing spec levels when looking at the price. I was surprised just how expensive a 320d ES ended up when compared to a 159Ti when I optioned up the BMW with leather, larger wheels etc to more closely match the Ti spec.

Fair review though Hunter, thanks.

I think your going to like that one manual or auto? the efficient dynamics package is (was when we purchased) only available on the 4 pot manual engined cars so you don't have electrically assisted steering.

I test drove a 330i and the steering felt very strange, didn't load up as expected felt disconnected from the car. That's one of the reasons we went for a 320 (albeit an auto which also wont have efficent dynamics but has still has electrically assisted power steering iirc, the optins tend to get a bit muddy in me head though there are so many) over a 325, the 6 pot's steering and handling setup just didn't feel as lively dynamically to me.

Obviously the power was greater but not sufficiently so that we wanted to pay the extra.

I also liked the steering wheel better, nice and chunky and lovely leather.
