Matter of Interest

Dunno what made me think of it but I was just wondering today if BMW were to do a M version of the 1 series, what would they call it as they clearly couldnt call it the M1?

Re: Matter of Interest

But that was before they decided to give dedicated names to cars manufactured by the Motorsport division.
The original (E28) M5 was manufactured (albeit shortly) after (and alongside) the M535, hence there wasn't an M6 as the M635 ceased production prior to the introduction of the new badging.

Lest we forget, there actually was an E34 M540i, which had all the equipment of the M5, bar the Motorsport division tuned 3.6 or 3.8 engine.

Yeh, OK, I used to be heavily involved with BMW, I was the regional rep for the East Anglian area of the BMW Club Forum.....

I saw the light (but hold a candle!)

Re: Matter of Interest

My father actually ran a BMW dealership for several years, until he saw the light, lol, he purchased a Mitsubishi dealership. Interestingly enough a few of the directors of Mitsubishi in this country years ago defected from BMW and went to work for Mitsubishi or Colt Cars, as they were known.
I remember the M535 and M635 very well, dont remember the M540 at all but I'm not going to disagree with you on that one.

Re: Matter of Interest

Well, to be honest, it wasn't released over here. There were only 32 of them made, all in Canada! I was just being an RS!
