There's only place to go for 4X4 and that's Land Rover - current Freelander, Discovery, RRS and RR are all great cars. But I'm biased.

Do you really need 4WD? I had a new Fiat Multipla for 6 years 78000 miles and averaged over 50 mpg, could look over hedges, seat 6 large people all with leg room, and total depreciation over 6 years was £9,100.

They are fun though, in the right environment.
Snow, sand etc.

I always go SUV when in the States.

The do you need a 4x4 is as relavent as do you need a car that goes over 70mph in Britain.....
If you intend to tow or go offroad a 4x4 is great fun, I've had a few when I have needed them, but if you don't need one then I wouldn't bother...
