Engine of the Year 2008

CARtoday.com - South Africa Motor Industry News | Motoring News

Hello

With the 2.5 in the 166 being the last time the marquee held is name high, lets hope that its little brother the 1.4 Turbo version in the Bravo can wave the Italian flag amongst the Huns and Japs.

I think the GT-R's engine will scoop the prize.

Re: Engine of the Year 2008

What about the RST V8 developed for the Caterham Levante and the Aerial Atom?
500bhp, 10k rpm from a powerplant that weighs in at 90kg! Impressive figures but not really an 'every day' engine.

And what's the VW TSI engine like with a supercharger + turbo strapped to a 1.4 engine? Is it as swish as it sounds or is it a bit of a flop? It's a nice idea but not heard much real-life feedback from it.

Supposedly its a bit too much of the latter, unfortunately

Nice idea though.

I would like to see Subaru win it with the Boxer diesel

Completely outclassed ALREADY by the 2.0 twin turbo diesel as fitted to the BMW 1 series - as much as I hate to say it

All of them obviously!

Why else would we own them. They're obviously the best cars in the world with the best engines in the world!

Ah, when it comes to character and the fun factor then yes. But I think BMW's comparative lack of character comes more from the cars themselves rather than the engines..

Re: Engine of the Year 2008

I was talking about Alfas over the weekend with my mates on a bike ride:

If I wanted something faster I would have bought a Civic Type R
If I wanted something more economical I'd have had a 1.4TDi Polo,
More reliable/ cheaper to fix? I'd have a Golf or a Focus
Something my mates would 'respect'? Audi A3

But I didn't buy my car based on what my mates think or how cheap it is to fix, I love my 147, even the diesel has character, it's fun and fizzy, it's the best 'feeling' car I've ever found, especially with the remap!

BMW may have a better engine but an engine doesn't make a car. Technically there's nothing wrong with BMWs, they're technically brilliant but it's the roll-neck golf club image that goes with them that kills the cars, not surprising 90% of them are grey!

Exactly. I think the same thing about my V6. And for what it owes me I couldn't have bought anything better.

So I'm well happy

BMW have done well.. Shocked that the Prius engine beat the VW Bluemotion diesel that is more economical and less polluting per mile..

Blue motion is mostly not about the engine! Tires, drag co-eff, lower revs...

BTW: best engine:
My girls Fiat Grande Punto 1.4 8 valve actually managed to climb the Alps in Italy on a 14% incline and maintain 100 mph on the German motorway for over 400 miles.....
