'American' Cars.

If there's one country/society that we in Britain shouldn't, in my opinion, aspire to be like it is America. For so many reasons.

However when it comes to cars it appears that increasing numbers of us want to be 'like them'.

There seem to be more and more Chrysler 300s and PT Cruisers and Dodge Calibers etc. etc. on our roads now and I detest them all.

I can't think of one that has any style or flair or panache.

Or individuality.

Re: 'American' Cars.

there are indeed some great yank motors out there. To say they're all bad is probably akin to saying 'All alfas are unreliable'

And we know what we think about unjustified sweeping generalisations like that, right?

Re: 'American' Cars.

Well at least they can still claim
to have an American motor industry.

The cars are designed and built
for a totally different market.

There are some real munters,
but I wouldn't write them all off
like that,

What about the Z4, 350Z Beetle etc?
Aren't they all West Coast US designs?
(I actually don't like them that much.)

And the UK produced some right
ol' carbage over the years. e.g.
anything BL designed.

Re: 'American' Cars.

Ah, now American Muscle is my favourite genre of car.

In the 80's America hit a bad time with their car designs, and the 90's didn't hold out much hope either.

This decade has been pretty decent though with the new shape Mustang, the new Camaro and the new Dodge Challenger are all amazing designs with performance to back it up.

The Caliber and PT Cruiser however do not get my vote, they are part of what I consider the 'Neon' left overs. The sort of Dodge Neon styled designs left over from the late 90's / early 00's.

The 60's and 70's though, I believe America were in their prime and kicking out some of the most amazing designs for cars ever.

1967 Mustang Fastback
1973 Buick Riviera Boat Tail
1967 Chevy Impala Fastback
1971 Mustang Mach 1
1970 Dodge Charger

All amazingly good looking cars in my opinion.

But then again, one mans Angelina Jolie is another mans Waynetta Slob.

Re: 'American' Cars.

Actually some of the things I like about my 156, and several other Alfas, are for the same reasons I like some american cars.
The dash layout on my 156 is almost a mirror image of the one in my old 'Vette, the one in a 147 (and GT) is very close to an early '60s 'Vette !
Then there is the fact that it is not soul less and perfect- For that you go German, who make the "best" cars in the world, but they don't in general stir my soul.
Look at the Viper - I mean look at it - V10 engine WTF Tell me any petrol head who wouldn't want a rip in one of those?
Proper Dodge Charger (1969 - ala Dukes of hazzard/Bullit/and Christine- I know Cristine is a Plymouth Fury BTW, see his pals blue charger?) especially with a 426 Hemi
'67 Camaro, mid 60s Mustang - 'kin hell the Bullit Shelby Mustang,
'Kin hell again Shelby Cobra - OK british body, but yank big block power, and chassis at the end, again if your a petrol head tell me you wouldn't want a thrash in a 7.0 litre Cobra, tell me your heart don't miss a beat when one goes past? (even a replica)
And finally because the Yanks have made some sh1te, it makes their success even better.
Oh and the noise from my old chevy smallblock and my Alfa v6 is a close competition

156 2.5 V6 SP3
Cosmos Blue, Black Momo leather, carbon dash, Cybox catback stainless steel exhaust, smoked repeaters, scuddetto centre grill, blacked out side grille bars

Re: 'American' Cars.

There are (roughly) two American cars I would like to own at some point:

- A 40s/50s woody wagon. Complete with surfboards in the back. Would look lovely in a dark, red tone and light wood.

- An early 60s Lincoln Continental as used by Kennedy. Not neccesarily without roof (the saloon looks very classy) and most certainly without snipers!

Re: 'American' Cars.

I don't particularly loathe American cars, but I think some of the latter designs from the USofA lack finesse and are pretty much just vulgar to look at...

Like the Dodge Nitro for instance, now come on, wth is that? Just disgraceful...

Re: 'American' Cars.

I like some American cars for the same reasons I like most Italian cars. With their individual design flair they are the only other cars I get genuinely enthusiastic about. If I had £25K going spare then I'd go hunting for a '67 Mustang fastback tomorrow. I also like the new Mustang, new Corvette ZO6 and the Chrysler 300C but probably not their fuel bills in this country.

Re: 'American' Cars.

This sums up american cars for me....

caught a bit of police stop or something like that from the US.

Police giving chase to a caddy (not sure what) but the commentator is
describing breath taking speeds the car was nearly doing 100mph

How did it get stopped - well the car went round an innocuous bend and it lost control and went over on its roof...

You only have to watch this program to realise that American Cars are in my personal view utter rubbish.

Said that I do like the styling of the cars of the 60's to 80's some real gems...shame they would be as much use on our roads as a chocolate fireguard.
