Re: Lancia Delta

In depth review in Autocar this week.Although the Delta uses the Bravo platform,it has been elongated to give more interior space, and better quality materials are used inside(the dash covering apparently comes from Maserati!)Personaly,I don't particularily like the design, the front is much too bulbous in comparison with the rest of the car,no doubt the result of new pedestrian impact legislation, but the oversize lights and grille don't do it any favours.I do quite like the rear view, and as stated in Autocar, while most of us look at the front of cars in showrooms etc.,out on the road,we usually see more of the back of them!

Re: Lancia Delta

looks good to me, especially in black and that creamy white. Not sure about the leather seats, remind me of a Rover 75. I imagine it will hit a similar sector the the Vauxhall Signum, of people with sat a 166, waning to down size yet not wanting to give up the big or premium car feel.

If properly marketed should do well.

Re: Lancia Delta

I was in Italy for the last two weeks and saw around 20 deltas zipping around the local roads, some slightly disguised but some with no disguise at all. Looked quite good I must admit. (I was near Cassino where the factory which builds them is). The back is still a bit odd, but the back lights look good (I followed one as it braked and indicated right). And it being Italy half of them were being driven by lunatics!

Re: Lancia Delta

Electronic variable damping suspension system (Reactive Suspension System)
The suspension configuration fitted to the Lancia Delta makes use of a tried and tested structure that has also been optimised for comfort and lightness: MacPherson strut system at the front with a mechanical beam and wishbones optimised for the new load conditions; a torsion beam and anti-roll bar configuration has been chosen at the rear in order to achieve excellent handling performance.
The real breakthrough on this model has been to introduce a feature produced in conjunction with some Magneti Marelli: The innovative system for damping fluctuations (Reactive Suspension System) until now reserved only for the very latest cars in higher segments has now been applied for the first time by the Fiat Group to a mid-segment vehicle.. In detail, the Reactive Suspension System can reduce vehicle body fluctuations under all driving conditions to allow the highest levels of safety, comfort and handling by means of real-time electronic control of the shock absorbers. More specifically, the sis able to identify the driving scenario and road surface conditions by means of a set of sensors and this choose the most appropriate control rules. These include a function referred to as the sky-hook that allows the passenger compartment to be insulated by essentially making it resistant to external interference.
Due to the high computing capabilities of the electronic control unit and the instantaneous response of accurate solenoids, the system also stamps out disturbances from an irregular road surface at source and allows outstanding dynamic control even during the sporty driving (selectable) to increase handling and manoeuvring accuracy.
Last but not least, the ‘reactive Suspension System’ reduces the cars braking distance (by approximately 5% due to the effective contact between wheel and ground) and ensures fast action in the case of emergency manoeuvres with consequent easy recovery of safety conditions.

Re: Lancia Delta

From Autocar:

Lancia: must try harder
Matt Saunders

There’s a reason why the interior of a Volkswagen Passat feels so different to that of the Audi A4.

VW Group understands that, to make punters pay big for premium products, it has to effectively separate them from its more mainstream offerings. And however many bits the Audi and VW share under the surface, you’d be hard pressed to find a single shared component in the cabin.

The management of the Fiat Group will be reminded of these home truths when reviews of the Lancia Delta begin to land.

Having just got back from driving it, I can honestly say that I’m gutted that it isn’t the car I hoped it would be. There’s no sugar-coating this; it just isn’t good enough. It isn’t refined enough; it isn’t sufficiently well appointed or finished. Frankly, it’s just too closely related to a Fiat Bravo to even justify comparison with a Volvo V50, let alone an Audi A3 Sportback.

And don’t think I’m expecting too much of the new Delta, either. I appreciate that it would be unreasonable to expect this car to be as upmarket as a Lexus IS, or a Mercedes CLC, because these days there are premium products and ‘premium products’.

I’d have been happy with material quality that measured up to Saab, Honda, or VW standards. To be honest, I’d have been happy if it could go over an expansion joint with the same quiet compliance as a Citroen C5.

No - Lancia seems to think that an extra bit of legroom in the rear (without any additional head or shoulder-room, I might add), an extra bit of boot space, some bits of faux-chrome trim and a generous options list is enough to turn a run-of-the-mill Fiat hatchback into something you’d pay £20,000 for.

You’d have to be either foaming at the mouth, or so nationalistic an Italian that you only eat tricolore pasta in green, white and red, to pay £20k for this car.

It’s a crying shame, because Lancia deserves to succeed. It deserves to be invested in; to be managed by someone who appreciates its pioneering history (Lancia pioneered independent suspension, the five-speed gearbox, the first V6 car engine and the first V4). It deserves to become Italy’s answer to Audi, Jaguar and Lexus; to be developed without regard for the consequences on Alfa Romeo, Maserati, or any other part of the Fiat Group.

But that will clearly take more money, more vision and more effort than Fiat itself is prepared to give it. And it can’t be achieved using Turin’s leftovers.

Until yesterday I was – as a confirmed Lancia fan – looking forwards to the reintroduction of the brand to Britain. Now I’m dreading it.

Re: Lancia Delta

Advertising campaign for the Delta launch: “Not a spot … but a film”

For the launch of the model that will mark its return to the most important European car segment, Lancia chose to interpret the positioning of the Delta by combining the personality of Richard Gere and a story that is particularly close to his lifestyle and the values he upholds within one advertising spot.

This is not a product story but a political poem about peace. The advert does not promote technical values but human values. The day of brochure adverts is over and Lancia has been conversant in the new language for some time.

Anyone wants to know about all the new features of the new Delta, can obtain information from the Internet, from the sales outlets and from dealers because the TV time occupied by the advert will be used to say just one thing: the world can be Delta, in other words it can be different.

In just 30 seconds, Richard Gere drives from Hollywood to Tibet to leave the same mark that he left in the Walk of Fame, in other words, to leave the mark of his hands in the spotless snow of Tibet. He travels along the roads that leaves behind the bright lights of Los Angeles and carries him on an imaginary and spiritual journey, first to the Hollywood hills and then, at the end of his uphill quest, to Lhasa, capital of Tibet. Gere arrives with his Delta in a village where he is welcomed by a group of small Tibetan monks. Together they place their hands on the snow, leaving the prints close together, to confirm the communion of feelings heralded by a mutual exchange of smiles

As many people know, Richard Gere is particularly interested in the fate of the Tibetan people and supports their cause through a foundation set up in his name, the Gere Foundation, to which he has decided to donate his fee for taking part in the advertising campaign.
Gere’s commitment to peace and the defence of the “right to make a difference” was the underlying reason for our deliberate choice of the American actor as a testimonial for the launch of the Delta.

A car that is also “different” in its style, content and character. Different even in its very name, Delta, the mathematical symbol for difference.
Richard Gere and the Lancia Delta therefore share a common character that is encapsulated by the final claim: “The power to be different”.

“My ideal Delta character” commented Olivier Francois, Chief Executive Officer of Lancia, “has a thousand personalities. My ideal Delta character makes his whole life into a road. But he does not allow himself to be carried away by this road, he drives along it and reinvents it. A Delta character is glamour but also courage. A Delta character is style and character. Richard Gere is not merely a fine actor; not merely one of the most famous men in the world. He is a man with a great difference: the ability to combine talent, fame and style with great character. I’m talking about his commitment to peace.”

The advertising spot has all the qualities of a true film: It was shot in Los Angeles, on Hollywood Boulevard and in the Rocky Mountains where the Tibetan village was reconstructed.
The film was directed by Harald Zwart, director of Pink Panther 2, while the director of photography was Wally Pfister who was responsible for the lighting for Batman Begins.

But there is more: the soundtrack is just as important as the images. It was composed specially for these images by the Oscar prize winner Ennio Morricone. It is a work of great appeal and emotion, with all the features of the great composer’s most celebrated works.

To sum up, this cannot be called simply an advertising spots but is an authentic film with an all-star cast that will certainly appeal to the hearts of its audience.
The agency is Marcel Paris, a creative lab of the Publicis group led by Anne de Maupeou and Frederic Temin. The campaign will have international breadth. It will first be aired in Italy on 13 June on the main TV networks and then be rolled out to all European countries from September.

Re: Lancia Delta

Just read a full review in A French mag.

So it's a weird long size, like a 308SW.

They aren't impressed by the interior and say it's very plasticy,
like a 1990 Fiat. They think it's nasty.

Small boot.

Good precise steering and light assistance
makes it a good drive with nice dynamics on back roads
even though it's not a light car. (Where've we heard that before...?)

SatNav has SD card slot.

Indeed, had their knives out for the Delta way before they drove it I suspect...

At least this week there's an interview with Lancia's big cheese who explains their policy and what new models to expect in the UK, although with Autocar around you have to wonder why they're even bothering....

Hold onto your hats...next week is the first driving impressions of the Mito.
