GTV TS 16V

General advice

Hello chaps

Bought my first Alfa yesterday. I was supposed to be buying a car for a run around to tie me over until I decide what I like but fell in love with a 1998 GTV TS with only 11,000 genuine miles on the clock. What a find.

Anyway, the original tyres are shot so need to get new ones. The originals are Goodyear Eagle Touring which are no longer available. The new tyre is Goodyear Eagle NCT. Any comments on these or other tyres would be welcome.

Also, can someone point me in the direction of where I can get clear side indicator lenses.

Any other subtle styling/upgrade tips would also be welcome.

Cheers guys

Mark

Mark, do you know if yours is a Phase 1 or 2? Ie: does it have the 16" flat faced wheels or the pepper pot styled wheels? Does it have black or colour coded side skirts?

If you have a Phase 1 then you could make a few mods to bring it up to date by making it look like a Ph2???

I had NCT's on my 156 Twinny and they were cracking tyres, really grippy and good in the wet too,

As said above, smoked / clear side repeaters are cheap as chips on eBay, about a tenner including postage?

I know can't believe it. Let's just say I paid a premium for the car considering the condition and mileage and taking into account that I need to service it with a timing belt and 4 new tyres but like I say it's a keeper for me.

Bob, had the car checked over and all genuine. The car was in storgage for 7-8 years. You can just tell the car is genuine as you can still smell the new leather and the stitching etc is practically untouched. Also, the paintwork is like new with no stone chips.

Darren, it must be phase 1 as it has the black side skirts and the wheels (16") are pepperpot style in that the holes are small around the edge of the wheel and not the 5 big holes which I think I prefer. Will get myself some clear indicators ordered. Thanks for that

Thanks guys for the comments. I have promised some pics at the weekend (weather permitting) in the introduction section and I will get some pics posted in here too.

Sounds like a good buy then Mark,

The two main things people often change over when they have a Ph1 is the wheels and the grille for that of a Phase 2. Both relatively cheap 'upgrades' really. HOWEVER, you'll probably get people on the other hand telling you to keep it in original condition and to leave all the Ph1 bits on instead.

It's personal preference as to whether you want it to look like an original Ph1, or 'upgrade' it a bit to a Ph2 looking car.

Here's my old 1997 GTV Ph1, and in my opinion the grille and wheels make the car look alot better:

Also, there's NOTHING wrong with the black side skirts and bumper valances as long as you keep them looking black as black. Use Autoglym Bumper Care liberally to keep them looking glossy black.

I had smoked side repeaters, but they came with the car, if I were to choose I'd have gone with clear like yourself.

Make sure to post some snaps of the motor though mate, Nothing like a nice GTV!!!

Nice car Darren, I don't think i've seen a GTV in that blue before. I think you're right, I'm more than likely going to keep the car standard due to the condition and miles etc.

Guido, thanks for the advice. I brought the car up to the chap that does all my tyres and he confirmed that the tyres are the originals. He said that Goodyear do not do the Eagle Touring anymore but they have Eagle NCT's instead. I didn't buy anything so I will ask him to price me Toyos as well.

Cheers

Mark
