Well, thats it for the Alfa......

i was all chuffed this morning, i was to take the 156ts to the mechanic for everything it needed, alt,, plugs, new engine mounts & full service includiong belts pullys etc.
took a while to get the money up, but had it all sorted.
arrived at the mechanic, and told him what i wanted. so, first job was to jack car up. a minute later he says to me " m8, do you want my advise ?. get rid of this car. he then showed me the rotton underside of the car in both front foot wells going back along each side to the rear doors. now to fix that it needs a **** load of welding x4 footwells, and on top of the things i wanted doing mentioned before. after he told me what the welding needed, and that he couldnt do it, came at me with a idea of how much that would cost, somewhere between 800-1000 quid maybe more, . then the work i went for in the first place added on top. he asked me if i still wanted the belts and everything else done...... whats the point, told him not to bother.

so, the car has mot till december & im gonna drive it till then, then strip it for parts.

really upset by this, was after this car for soooo long, for it to end up being a lemon is hard to take.

Thats a shame mate. It seems the rust-proofing on the early 156s was very hit and miss. Mine is a February '98, one of the earliests, never been garaged to my knowledge and spent 3 years of its life in Saltburn by the Sea, and it is solid as a rock underneath.

My advice to you would be to get one on eBay with a broken engine, take your known good one out, fit new belts out of the car, and put the engine into the known good shell.

My march '98 is an ex rep mobile (according to the previous owner ) **read unloved** and it's solid too.

My mate is very handy with a welder and he's easy to pay if you change your mind

It depends on how much you need done really. He doesn't have an hourly rate, it's a take it or leave it price which is better imo. I'll try and drag him to the all Ireland Alfa meet or something if his gf will let him go

Bad news DK, I don't think I ever spotted you around, and it's going to be a bit more difficult now, especially if you get a blandomobile

unfortunately it's not my area of expertise.

Went car shopping with my big Bro once, he ended up with light green Sierra Sapphire (it was a while back )

get yourself to Cultra on the 29th, plenty of experts there I imagine

I'm selling my 156 soon to make way for an R1 (it will be a bargin and I can't miss it), it has done about 300 miles since the belts, waterpump and tensioners were done last month, as well as the oil & filter (biking season ).... and I forgot to tax it
Any inspection welcome
I will be buying anothe Alfa in a few months when I can afford another car
