My 3 Day Old 156 Gta

Hi guys

As ive posted earlier ive just taken delivery of my 156 gta and its "died" on me already after 3 days ownership! Despite coming with full service history + £2k of receipts in the last 12 mths , i coasted to a halt 2 miles from home (with kids in the car) and had to wait for the AA to save me! The AA guy is 100% sure its the alternator + ive just been unlucky. Very unlucky judging by some of the posts on the matter and the hassle involved. So, the question is , what do i do now? Take it to an autospark? To a specialist? or bite the bullet + take it to main dealer? Any advice welcome regarding costs, time etc. Just when every single person i know thats seen my lovely new car has commented on supposed Alfa reliability fs!

Im based in Newtownabbey btw

Hi there, I'm in Newtownabbey too

Whereabouts are you?

As for indies, other than Eurofix there aren't any Alfa specialists about that I know of. If you join the Northern Ireland Italian Motor Club we get a discount at Mervyn Stewarts. Although the Alfaowner Northern Ireland section is tied in with the NIIMC you need to be able to produce your NIIMC membership card at MS to get your discount. Details are at The NI Italian Motor Club

Best of luck with the car and I'll keep an eye out for your GTA

I have a spare alternator for a 156 JTS, I doubt it is the same one for a GTA but if someone here could confirm. If it was the same I'll courier it up to you and give you a good price on it.

The 156 GTA runs a 140A alternator if that helps

Just down the road more or less. I'm around the corner from Whiteabbey railway halt.

I think one of the guys off here couldn't get Eurofix on a Saturday so you may have to wait until Monday.

Don't let it get you down just yet. It's not indicative of any other faults (apart from possibly a weak battery), and doesn't suggest it's a badly looked after car or anything - it's just one of those things that can fail at this sort of age.

Think yourself lucky! My alternator also failed on me a couple of months back - but I was at the top of the Alps at the time!

No, i know the car has been very well looked after, the car has EVERY receipt from new + i got it AA tested before i bought it. The car is immaculate in every way + im still chuffed but just raging at not being able to drive it.Now ive calmed down a bit Im just glad it didnt happen on the drive up through England/Scotland i must admit. The old saying that you should be prepared to throw £500 odd at a used car seems quite apt. Now its the annoying questions about the whereabouts of the car and the "i told you so's"from workmates/friends/relatives thats going to **** me off this week!

I've had the GTA for 2 1/2 years now. So far it's been pretty good but had the radiator changed under warranty as well as front upper and lower wishbones, antiroll bar and droplinks. The car has also had the Q2 diff fitted and had a remap.

What colour is your GTA? I'll keep an eye out for it when you get her back on the road.

The car's silver Jon - left it over to John at Eurofix today , hes got quite a wee squad working for him Hes looking at it tomorrow. I only got as far as Hazelbank on my own battery but, called the AA + the guy "lent" me a fully charged one and i made it across town ok. So, ive used the AA twice since joining on fri night Getting my moneys worth but they have been excellent tbf

Got it back today! £280 for recon alternator + labour. Was expecting maybe a bit cheaper tbh, it also has picked up a bit of an annoying rattle that wasnt there before. John tells me the anti- rollbar has maybe been disturbed while theyve been working on it but , it doesnt make any difference to the car. Is quite annoying on bumpy roads though he's quoted me another £300 to get it changed so i think i'll plough on for a while + just turn the radio up
