This weekend an international movement called Museums at Night 2011 is taking place. Hundreds of museums, galleries, libraries, archives and heritage sites are unlocking their doors for special evening events over the weekend.

This unusual and fascinating museum used to be one of the best kept secrets among Cheshire's many attractions. Over the past few years it has undergone some major changes and is now recognised as one of the Country’s leading specialist museums.
Situated just south of Manchester in the leafy countryside of Higher Poynton, the museum is on the site of the old Anson Colliery. It is the result of Les Cawley and Geoff Challinor's years of hard work collecting and restoring engines. This award winning museum houses a unique collection of over 200 gas and oil engines, many maintained in running order. Ranging from early Crossley gas engines through to more modern diesels. Engine enthusiasts from all over the world come to visit this fascinating museum.
Normal opening hours 10:00 - 17:00 then staying open until 20:00
The museum will have many engines running with talks on how they work and engine development through the years.
They will also have running the Fowler Beam Engine (built c1872) on loan from the Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery. And the A-frame steam engine that was used at Adlington Hall to run various machinery (eg saw bench) in, what is now called, the Hunting Lodge

This is an opportunity for anyone who is interested in internal combustions engines to experience some of the oldest engines known and to learn how internal combustion has developed since it's early days.
So I propose that we meet at the museum at
17:00 ~17:30, enjoy the museum, then find a nearby pub for refreshments afterwards. (Pub tba ~ any suggestions welcome).
