Hello!

When i shift into the second gear there is a small thud and the car shakes. The thud is more noticeable (very noticeable actually) when the car is shifting down to second gear. Occasionally (very seldom so far) there is a scratching noice when it is shifting down but this sound has never been heard when shifting up to second gear.

The thud is also sporadical as in it isint constant. Sometimes the shifting can go smooth up and down. I experience that the thud is more frequent when the car have been on stand still over the night and i first start it up and drive.

Atm the error lamp is on due to Camshaft position error. Can this have something to do with the problems im experiencing ?

EDIT: Also the thud and scraping as never been heard when i change gear in MAR mode.

Best regard Christoffer

You might want to use diagnostics to check the clutch rod length - it should be adjusted to between 28.0 and 28.5 mm. It might not be the cause of your 'thud' but it's always a good place to start.

And for selespeed fluid (there is no separate clutch fluid) you should most definitely not use brake fluid. Correct oil is Tutela CS speed, though you can substitute with certain automatic gearbox fluids. Tutela is available from any Fiat/Alfa parts place and is barely any more expensive than the alternatives so best to stick with the correct stuff in my opinion.

I dont understand. Becouse in the user handbook in the car it says brake/clutch and DOT 4. Is this only for NONE selespeed engines then?
The Selespeed clutch is operated mechanically by the Selespeed actuator, which itself is operated hydraulically using the CS-Speed fluid (which is a high spec ATF).

The brakes still use DOT4.

Ok - for the brakes, use DOT 4. On a normal manual gearbox car with a clutch pedal the brakes and clutch share the same fluid and reservoir. But this is not the case on a selespeed. In your handbook it should tell you to use Tutela CS speed for the Selespeed system.

The brake fluid reservoir is fitted to the bulkhead behind the engine, the selespeed reservoir is at the far left of the engine bay.

Now there's an interesting point, when discussing the engine bay, does one refer to an items position as one is standing in front of car looking at the engine (as one usually is working on it), or as if one is sitting in car facing forward, as if driving?

As one is standing in front of the car looking at the engine. You would not be looking into the engine bay from the drivers seat.

I will always avoid using "left & right" when trying to describe to someone where something is on a car.

I will use Nearside/Offside or Drivers/Passengers side (LHD/RHD taken into account).

The reason I asked, is that I was interested to see Sprint state "The brake fluid reservoir is fitted to the bulkhead behind the engine, the selespeed reservoir is at the far left of the engine bay. "

Now New Zealand is right hand drive, as is the UK & Australia, so he would have to be using the drivers position as the viewing reference, I am not saying he is right or wrong, just found it a curiosity.

Near side and off side are terms only used in the UK as far as I know, so meaningless to most people. Drivers side and passengers side depend on whether it's LHD or RHD, so also confusing.

Does your RHD car suddenly have the steering wheel on the left, just because you're looking at the car from the front? I think it's pretty much universal that for things that move like cars, trucks, boats, aircraft, etc left and right (or port and starboard) are always referred to in relation to it's 'normal' direction of travel.

The only other way to describe the position of the sele reservoir for example, would be to say that when standing in front of the car looking at the engine bay the reservoir is to your right. It can be to your right, but it will always be on the left side of the car.

Positions of parts in a car regardless if its right hand or left hand steering is from the drivers position, and the selespeed tutela reservoir is left !
