Driving the car home tonight and there was a horrible knocking noise, then the car ground to a halt. Looked underneath and could see oil. The engine won't turn over now. Probably need a new engine. Can someone shine some light on how much to rebuild or buy a decent engine.
There is a recent thread here (which I can't find at the mo) with someone with a similar problem to you.
Auto Lusso quoted recon engine fitted with warranty somewhere in the region of £1500.
The same thing happened to me when the 2.0 GTV blew up at 170k miles.
Local indie sourced and fitted one that had done 135k - I reckoned it was worth the risk if it lasted a year. The "new" engine blew 18 months later and I called it a day. It was then up to 189k miles.
Cost? Sourcing, fitting and transferring the good bits (alternator, cam belt, tensioners and variator - only about 5k miles - but I know, I know) - £750.
It threw a rod btw - nothing to do with the cambelt transfer.
If I was 20 years younger I would source and fit one myself - I reckon it could be done for about £400.
Could probably sort an engine for £300, plus delivery. I'd strongly recommend a belt change before fitting, however. Engine is still in a 156 so would be a few days before it was available.....
Had a rebuild put in mine a few weeks ago by the boys in Bedford. Running it in at the moment. Well worth the £1.5k. If you want to keep the car and have the cash then its worth going down this route.
Had mine replaced by Monza a couple of years back. Plus new cambelt kit, variator etc for around 2K. All good but not cheap and didn't go down very well with my other half... Still now it uses virtually no oil and she's still going strong
