I was at a loss of what to do today so I decided to see if what kind of air filter I had in the V6
I have just had it serviced and I wanted to see what the garage had put in.
To my surprise, the filter was the old one. It hadn't been changed. It was as black as soot. I was angry.
I then measured the offending item. Only 250mm tall. I am sure that it should be around 280 ish mm tall.
I have been running around for a year or more with this in the car and it seems to have been running fine in general. Plenty of power. But it may explain my weak idle (struggles around 500 revs when warm).
Firstly in going to complain to the garage for not changing it or noticing it was the wrong one.
Would I be likely to see a power increase when I put in the correct sized filter? Any recommendations for sourcing a good one.
Don,t use euro car parts for the air filter, I once did and ended up receiving the twin spark one instead. Only knew that after removing the old one and putting it back in !. Got mine from jamie porter.
Some airfilter after market sellers are confusing matters by stating the 2.0 TS filter as suitable for the 3.0 V6. They are NOT . They are different lengths.
Correct Part No: 60623350 283mm long
Incorrect Part No: 60603977 258mm long for 2.0 engines
Awesome Phil. Thanks for that. The top of my filter housing is cracked and the maf tube retaining semi circle clip is rusted to hell. Both will need to be replaced. Only held on by two of three screws, the third is rusted and sheared off.
Something for me to do anyway.
Oil is also making it's way into the bottom of the fair filter housing so I'm going to try to sort that. That's what you get for making your own intake pop without oil collection unit.
Will look at speccing an oil breather filter to combat this.
Please look at the ad and the length of the filter stated (part H on the diagram). It states 258mm long. THIS IS THE WRONG FILTER for the V6, this is for the TS engine! Read post 5!!
Thanks all. Yes this is the exact same filter that I have. Same colour, except this on it cleaner.
It appears to be quite a minefield trying to get the right one if you didn't know the correct size.
I am still pretty livid with the garage. I had loads done to the car. All gaskets, plug and fluids so it cost me a lot. The fact that they never checked the filter worries me.
So I was searching for filters - think Im going to use Alfa Worshop as they actually list the length of the filter.
Interestingly, upon searching for 'Alfa GTV v6 filter', I got the following link. Why on earth is this even on the internet, let alone on the first page of Google?
A 'specialist' stuck the wrong size filter on my one MAF lasted about 15 miles, before revving above 4000 was impossible, so you have done well. A small award for the most random link there.
I don't think it helps when the sellers don't realise that there are two different sizes for the two engines. They simply list that the TS filter fits the v6.
The K&N filters are another example. They only seem to offer one filter but list that it fits both (same part number). I wanted an uprated filter but in the end plumped for the original spec one from Alfa Workshop who were very friendly and helpful.
I am AMAZED that the MAF has lasted as long as it has. I appear to have found a good MAF. Every cloud has a silver lining.
