If you buy your car second hand, there's always bits you need, as various bits and bobs are missing or damaged.
Fortunately the GT shares parts with the 147 & 156.

So as the other half went on a hen do I spent today trawling scrappies for those bits I need.

I picked up the following

The rubber bit that attaches to the parcel shelf. One missing obviously.
One of the screws that holds the plastic cover to the engine (one was missing!)
One do the round flat screws that hold the trim under the glove box in place. Need all four but could only find one.
Also picked up various relays as well which look mint!

All of which cost me nowt! But makes my GT look so much better

Still after a flat front number plate plinth, 3 more trim thingies. And a set of unscratched air con dials. And a new ASR / Fuel cap release button.

Anyone else had any joy at the scrappy?

No scrap yards anywhere near me I would be likely to find a GT. I need the 2 covers that fit either side of the high level brake light. They weren't on the car when I bought it and I can't believe the original owner removed them, must have been forgotten during manufacture.

I could go to the dealer I suppose, but I only ever think about them when I see they're missing.

All the best

Oooh, bit of a drive from St Leonards. Factor in fuel be cheaper to go to the dealer about 50 metres away.

SLM lost the Fiat franchise, fortunately SLM Vauxhall will order Fiat/Alfa parts, dunno how long they'll keep doing that for.

The only things I need for my GT are the sat nav CDs and the sim card holder. Given the condition of the car I can't believe the previous owner didn't leave them with it when he traded it in. Some thieving git at the dealer will have had them. If there is such a thing as karma he will now have a fungal infection of the nether regions.;)

Spent some time at the scrappies today too. My wife's Clio decided that one of the rear doors would not open, either from the inside or outside!!

After two or three hours I managed to get the door open by removing the door card from inside the car and then working on the lock from inside the door.

I then managed to find a local scrappie with a four door Clio of the right vintage. Went down and they took the lock off for me. It's now fitted and working fine. A good fix for £15 !!!!

Plastic lens fell off my Dad's Peugeot Expert mobility van rear light. Luckily I was stopped in traffic so I thought I could just pick it up and re-secure it but the person behind still decided to drive over it and break it before I could retrieve it !!!!!!!
Went to the breakers, "yeah I've got one, follow me". So we walk up to the donor vehicle and all of a sudden the guy in charge of the scrapyard just kicks it out with his hefty size 11 and then says " the brackets are broken so I can let you have it cheap" ????????? Neanderthal tw*t, so I've ordered a new one on-line

I constantly use scrapped cars. It the thing that keeps my cars running for next to nothing. Last time I bought a manifold and cats rather than buy new. Cheaper than new lamdas which also means I have spares. Hoorah.

Bargains are to be had. I also got 4 coil packs for twenty notes.

What's the procedure at scrappies? I have had a look round a few quickly but always felt out if place wasn't sure whether to just start taking bits I need and take them to guys in charge for price or call them over if I want something?

Someone able to tell me what's the procedure

It can vary sometimes the cars are in different areas ie. interior parts only or anything .Best thing is just to check saves the embarrasment
Just say roughly what your looking for then most times you'll be grunted in the right general direction.

I'm in Ashford, but I went to Sittingbourne yesterday.
I got the MAF from Amazon from Germany. 80 odd quid delivered. Much cheaper than anywhere in this country!

Hi I might have a link or contact I'll have alook for you.
As for the sim mine is a 2002 car (147) but have no trouble at all
I have to ask what sim are you using its not a 4G sim is it as I just have a basic Tesco one.
and i take it you have tried putting it in different ways to make sure it's in right? Sorry had to ask as I'm sure mine didn't work the way round I thought it should.

There are no scrappies left anywhere near me that
A) have Alfas.
B) allow you to wander.
C) charge sensible money.

Last time I needed a bit was a few years back, needed a bit of boot trim for my Fiat Stilo. The Fiat dealer wanted £65 for the bit. I went along to a scrappy and they had one on their shelf, £50 + VAT. That's stupid. Needless to say the car stayed minus the left hand side boot trim panel.

Is the disc the same as I thought I had read that although they share the same name the systems were slightly different.

As an ex-scrapyard owner, I know that the ability to just mooch around a yard has become much more restricted. I closed my general yard about 9 years ago now, and even then it was impossible to get sensibly priced public liability insurance to allow unaccompanied public wandering. So you always lived in fear of someone "falling over" and suing the a**e off you. Couple that with the prevailing view that all scrapyard owners were ripping you off so you got your retaliation in first by nicking everything you could lay your hands on, and the attraction of letting someone in who was "just looking" waned markedly.

If someone (certain regulars excepted) couldn't tell me what they wanted, they either waited until a staff member could accompany them, or went away......

Always tell the owners what you've taken - generally if you are fair with them , the reverse will apply and whilst you will be charged for the larger bits, usually a few "extras" will be nodded through. If you are found to have nicked stuff, however, the "nod" might not be so friendly. Summary justice is much more appropriate than costing the taxpayer money to drag such things through the courts, I think you will find. Oh - breaking things to get at what you want - eg smashing a rear light lens to nick a bulb - is generally frowned upon, too.......

I always find just that. Although I usually ask if they have a certain car etc in that I can find bits from.
Most just let me get on with it. If I say upfront I am after so and so.

Like you say as long as they get a fair price they are never bothered with the little stuff.
They've not had to lift a finger and I've done the work and been honest. So they are happy. I am happy.

With Alfa's though there are a few specialist breakers round by me.

Auto Italia Parts (Cannock) Neil on here
Clarkes Alfa Romeo (Walsall) chap called Steve
Italian Specialist Parts (Wednesbury) never really used these as they seemed over priced.

So between those three companies I can usually get what I like.
I can also barter between the three to see who has the best price.

Nothings ever felt out of reach.

I brought the the engine that went bang in my 147 from there but still not sure why it went bang not had the will to strip it
I take it you mean Wendsbury car breakers

#42 ·
Yeah I believe it was them. They are more along the lines of Italian car breakers. So all kinds of items available.
They advertise a lot on ebay though.

Steve Clarke doesn't really advertise at all
Neil is on this site and does ebay too. But usually you get better prices speaking to him.

That's where I got my engine from when the big end bearing decided to break up on my 1.6.
Still ran mind. Sounded like a bag of spanners. But still got me home and to work several times though. Ha.
Say what you want about Alfa's they have never stopped me getting anywhere. Even when they are on their last legs.

I also ran it on two cylinders for a little while when the coil packs were dying.
Just disabled the injectors and spark plugs.
