Anyone here got what could be described not as a rattle but a plasticky 'thunk' coming from the rear of their GT? I'm not on about the DREADED BOOTLID RATTLE because I don't think this is as severe.

I used to get a similar noise in my 147 and never got to the root of it. It happens when the body flexes over uneven roads. Anyone got a fix out there?

It's unnoticeable with the stereo on, but I do like to drive in silence and listen to the engine now and then, and that's when I notice it.

I had what I first thought was the bootlid rattle but, after reading about it more on here, realised the sounds was not what I was hearing. My son summed it up best as 'sounding like really heavy but slow rain hitting the rear windscreen'.

It took me about three weeks to figure out what it was and I could not believe I had missed it! One of the prongs that holds the rear parcel shelf in it's clips had lost the little rubber ring that goes around it...and so it was knocking due to not being snug. This was resonating through the back of the car and making the sounds:rolleyes:

Ah! Did you just remove the parcel shelf or replace the rubber thing? I've not been out in the GT today as the 156 needed some t.l.c. after its encounter with a branch, but I'll have a listen tomorrow when I'm out and about. Thanks for the tip :)
The dealer did not have the rubber thing in (not phoned back to say it is in either:rolleyes: ) so I just got the one that was there and carefully cut it down the middle to make two...so there is now a thin one on either side that holds it tight:D

Alas, that wasn't the cause. Both rubber things are present and correct. The sound is like someone occasionally drumming their fingers on plastic. I've checked out the whole boot area and can't seem to replicate it with the car stationary.

Heigh ho, back to turning up the stereo like I used to in the 147...that or coating everything in sight with silicone spray and hoping for the best!

Not sure my problem is 100% similar but the sound could best be described as some cable knocking on some metallic part in the boot. I tried to secure all cable running by the rear headlight clusters but didn't cure the problem. I have now realised that there is a rubber missing from the parcelshelf where it meets that rear window (bottom). I can't see why this would cause the "rattling " sound but who knows !!!

Hello Children Everywhere

I have had my 47,000 mile 2005 GT as second owner for a few weeks. Quite suddenly yesterday afternoon I got a rattle from the rear, usually over 30 MPH. I checked the sprung bump stops (60664837) on the bottom of the rear door (not boot lid, hatchback, tailgate) and they had been pushed upwards and turned clockwise to lock in position. I guessed they should spring the rear door up a little when released, so unlocked them. This improved the rattle, but how did the stops suddenly cause a rattle when they must have been in the unsprung position?
I called Fish Brothers at Swindon to check whether my car was produced after the weld modification, and the pleasant young man answering the phone was able himself to check my chassis number in about 20 seconds, to confirm no modification required or recalls (campaigns) pending.
I have also invested £3.98 including postage in a 2005 ePER DVD (ebay), which is a comprehensive all FIAT makes parts list.
