I've had a 2007 159 and now have a 2009 159, both 1.9jtdms.
The 2007 clutch was still fine at 88K when I sold it, the 2009 has just had a new clutch at 96K. So it is due one soon! Depends on the journeys and life it has had.
The 2009 car is up for sale at the place I have had my last 3 Alfas from. Not had a problem with them,
I would be going for the 2009 car myself, a few differences between the 2007 and 2009 car, weight saving being one. And if the higher miles have been motorway miles, easier life for the car. My 2009 has done 96K and is good.
Thanks for the advice guys. Ive gone for the 07. It saved me £400 and ive got peace of mind having a new clutch and disks. Yes the 09 has been updated, lightened, new style seats and usb stereo (plus more i expect) but it would have put me in the red even more, and given me the added fear of the clutch and disks to come.
Buying from Simply Alfas also made the decission easier, couldnt have got a better service and seems like a good contact to have for the future.
my 1.9 is on 89k and still on original clutch. my car was a motorway munching work horse. sat at 70mph for long distances.... when cambelt was done last week, i asked about cluch. mechanic said it felt fine and that the 159 clutch goes really heavy when its on its way out...
That's some pretty epic mileage for an original clutch!
Mine had a remap by previous owner at 60K, so think the last 35K of miles had an effect on the clutch.
Happy enough with 95K to be fair.
wait, clutches go how often? and cost how much???
are clutches considered a consumable on alfas now?!
I've never had to replace a clutch ever, on any car in our family. I thought the 156 had far more 'consumables' compared to japanese cars that have never needed any parts beyond batteries/brakes/tyres... (servicing not included obviously)
*but seriousy, the 07 is a whole grand cheaper man... and debateable but I'd go for that leather over black, only as I've had black for the last 6yrs now and want a change!
Knowing John and Colin at SimplyAlfas they would have replaced the flywheel and clutch if there were any doubts, they replace cambelts/pumps as a matter of course on their sales cars.
the 09 will have done (assumption) more motorway miles, more time in 6th gear, so the clutch will last longer as will the dmf and gearbox.
the 07 will have done less (again assumption) on the motorway and less in 6th gear, so the clutch, dmf and gearbox will wear quicker.
Cars driven mainly on a school run around town, such as a zafira cdti with the same engine & box may need a gearbox rebuild as early as 40k, at the same time you would do the dmf and clutch whilst the box is out.
I would not be put off by the miles, but would be concerned about the useless excuse of a gearbox (m32) that was supplied for use with the 1.9 engine and make sure the warranty covers it beyond known failures and wear and tear, which is what most warranties will not cover.
