Its looking like I need to change the steering rack on my 05 156 JTDm but I'm a bit confused as to how difficult the job is! I've looked on the forum and some seem to say its a sod, others say its ok. Some say you need to drop the subframe, others say it will slide out without dropping the subframe. Has anyone had to change the rack and can tell me what's involved? I have access to a lift and windy guns etc
There are recon racks on ebay for £125 with 2 year guarantee from Western Power Steering in Bristol. Anyone had any experience? He's got excellent feedback. Are all racks for 156's the same?
I guess I should change the ARB bushes as well??
Thanks
sorry to be a dumb girl - i've had some noise coming from the steering wheel area when I USE my Alfa 156. I took it to a mechanic and he said I should have my 'rack' reconditioned and it'll cost about about £150.
does this sound right - plus i need a new set of tyres. So far I'm getting quoted about £80 per tyre is this right?

probably easier and quicker to get a recon and swap yours out. Otherwise you have to take the rack out, send it away, wait for it to come back and refit it.
But before you do that, check that the steering fluid isn't just low.
You might want to get a second opinion. Where are you located and did you take it to an Alfa specialist, or just the spanner monkey round the corner.
Depends on the tyre size and make. You can find out the size on the tyre sidewall. It will be something like 205/55R16 ... or it might end in 15 or 17 if you have standard wheels. Then visit an online website like blackcircles.com or mytyres.co.uk and try searching and get prices from them.
cheers Gary - will have the fluid checked first and thanks for the tyre tips.
