Hi everyone

Blooming ABS has stopped working on 145 cloverleaf...bugger.
Anyone had same problem?
Checked 60 amp fuse ok, but warning light remains on and ABS not functioning.
Its the wrong sort of weather to have problems with brakes....help please

Is yours an early cloverleaf?
If you have an early 2e ABS system you can get the diags out of the system by earthing the A wire of the 3 pin connector by the Black Box of ******** and counting the flashes on the ABS indicator.

Popular faults are:
Blown stop light.
60A fuses you've just tried.
White connectors under the back seat. I think the wires break at the back of the connectors rather than there being a poor connection.

Another thing that can stop your ABS working in weather like this, is the handbrake freezing on slightly. If it does it little enough to not really be noticeable, it can still be enough to confuse the ABS system.

Ta Bazza, thats something to look out for in future.
I generaly leave handbrake off when at home due to advice given by Alberto of Alberto's Motors some years ago. They certainly have a tendancy to stick on.
They are a great car but after 5 years of happy motoring....time for a change methinks

Sticky brakes won't do it unless one is binding causing a difference in wheel speed (Unlikely).
Why not get some diags out. You just need to earth the A lead off the connector. This photo shows the setup in a Fiat Coupe which has the same ABS unit and wiring. There is a similar 3 pin connector lurking around the Black Box of B***ocks.

Here are the codes etc.
ABS Diags.

Earth Pin a of connector T8 which is a black 3 position unconnected diagnostic connector by the bulkhead on the passenger side.

Now turn on the ignition and count the ABS light flashes.

The first number will be 12 which is 1 flash, pause, 2 flashes.
then 12 another 2 times.

Now comes your fault code. The system can spew out up to 3 codes I think.

16- Faulty LH Solenoid Valve
17- Faulty RH Solenoid Valve
18- Faulty Rear Solenoid Valve
19- Faulty Safety Relay
25- Incorrect number of phonic wheel teeth
35- Faulty Pump Motor
37- Faulty brake switch
39- Faulty LH sensor front
41- LH front sensor not connected
42- Faulty RH sensor front
43- RH front sensor not connected
44- Faulty LH Rear sensor
45- LH Rear sensor not connected
46- Faulty RH Rear sensor
47- RH Rear Sensor not connected.
48- Insufficient supply voltage
55- Faulty ECU (ABS)

When you start getting 3 12s again it has finished.

I think I am not understanding this flashing method , since I cannot get the Fiat ecu to work on the ABS code box , this seemed like a good alternative . Can someone explain this sequence a different way. As I see it you get one flash , a pause then twoo , then another two and then 16 for the first code then so on. How can it put out three codes then if it has to do 16.

Both older 2e and newer 5.3 ABS systems on Alfas support the above diagnostics which need nothing more than a piece of wire to run. Although this photo is of a Boxer, the Twinsparks also have the wire in a similar position.

Here's an example where the are three faults - a 16, a 17, and a 18.
If there are fewer faults you will return to the sequence of 12s sooner.

1 flash, pause, 2 flashes, longer pause (12)
1 flash, pause, 2 flashes, longer pause (12)
1 flash, pause, 2 flashes, longer pause (12)
1 flash, pause, 6 flashes, longer pause (16)
1 flash, pause, 7 flashes, longer pause (17)
1 flash, pause, 8 flashes, longer pause (18)
1 flash, pause, 2 flashes, longer pause (12)
1 flash, pause, 2 flashes, longer pause (12)
1 flash, pause, 2 flashes, longer pause (12)
1 flash, pause, 6 flashes, longer pause (16)
1 fla....... etc.
