hello everyone i bought a 147 2.0 selespeed and after a week there began a whiring grinding noise which seemed to be speed related ,i took it the garage and it was the gearbox.they offered me a newish one for 600 fitted so i said yes.10 days later they got back saying they fitted the gearbox but they have only 3 gears????and need to get my car into a alfa garage to fix the computer as its now dead???or wiped clean??so ive got to wait until they can get it in an alfa garage ...will a computer problem only give you 3 gears?will fitting a new gearbox cause the computer to be wiped clear etc?and hes also said these cars have a problem with second gear?mine worked fine before they had it ,do these cars have a problem with second gear?i think im being fobbed off please help thanks paul

Man, I hope you learned your lesson!

Always go to an alfa garage for anything. I mean indie garage not dealer ;)

Seems they moved something so the calibration routine has to be launched. Or maybe the sensor for gears 2 and 4 has been broken/unplugged?

Go to an alfa garage and have the other one help you pay the bill. If they refuse to settle, call your lawyer.

almost right, there can be an issue with 4th gear not engaging due to swarf build up, this affects manual boxes as well.

If they have messed up the ECU they are readily available from a breaker as they rarely go wrong, but it is more likely as Loknar says, there is a damaged sensor of something not connected up correctly, they could also have damaged the multi-pin plug during the dismantling process

Which gears have gone AWOL? and did the new box come with a new actuator, or did they transfer over the existing one?

Is not that seles are more awkward to work on, they just show up the failing of poor mechanics that bit more readily than conventional systems.

How far from WAD in Wolverhampton are you?

the gears before workd ok as did the car it was just a rubbing noise coming from the gearbox so the replaced just the gearbox thet have since said its inf the computer had on it has been wiped out and so thats why i now have only 3 gears?????they said the gearbox is ok they put in but second gear can be a bit of a problem???well it wasnt before i might add.anyway they are supposed to be sending it to platts an alfa garage so they can do the chip problem ???or program the computer and that will fix the gears ...but they are going to charge me for that because they said i paid them to fit a gearbox and they have its not there fault the computer chip has been wiped????please advise

Yes, a computer will cause the gears to not select properly. They would have removed the actuator from your gearbox and fit it to the new box. Every time the actuator is disturbed from the gearbox, it needs to re-learn it's gear positions. (This is the EOL routine on Alfa examiner or Alfadiag, and should only take 10 mins to set up). Your car's in limp mode & should be nothing to worry about when hooked up to the proper diag.

you are royally scr*wed by he garage "experts"
selespeeds need setting the clutch pin and calibrating (EOL routine) after a gearbox change ...
invest in alfadiag or fiatecuscan and a cable and you are the one that calls the shots !
