Mot and Tax ran out today...
so on my way to get new front tires (looking a bit ropey) and car overheated...

Came back on a recovery truck.

No leaks, no loss of water..
am i assuming that its the water pump? and if so... can i expect the headgasket to need doing as well? (no water in the oil) and when it overheated.. IMMEDIETLY dropped it into the hardsholder and let it cool.

I'm concerned the garage havent fixed what they promised they had in january.. should have had a full cam belt kit.. which included tensioners.. but it still sounds like a diesel?

any idea if i will need to do a full cam belt change again? or i can just use the previous?

its very disappointing.. but i simply cannot afford for the repairs this time around.. i cant afford a cambelt change, mot and tax all in one shot like this..

is there anyone in the area (wantage) who can come and gimme a hand with pulling out the water pump? im happy to pay in bacon sandwiches, cups of tea.. and any spare money i can find!!

if it sounds like a diesel it is probably the variator which would not be included in the cam belt kit, this part alone costs in excess of £170. sorry to burst your bubble, and yeah i would say its the water pump failure that caused it to overheat. Head gasket should be ok if you pulled over quick enough

Shop around mate

Alfa Romeo GTV Variators

There is info on here listing the many reasons why variators should not be repaired. (In a nutshell, waste of time) fit a new one is best.

Sorry bud if it was closer I could have a look at a few things in yours i'd come for free be doing me a favour but i'm in staffordshire so trecking to oxfordshire is a bit much, sorry m8ty and I hope you have some luck.

From what i've read last post is correct diesel sounding is variator gone and price is around right but from what i've seen it doesn't cause damage running with a sha**ed one its just a hassle to do at any other time than a belt change as everything has to come out again to get at it, and it don't sound good but if moneys tight then oh well.

Water pump should have been included in cambelt change kit though.

alot of things should be included in a full service but when i bought mine (about 3 weeks ago) with full service history, all belts (cam and balancer belt kits ) the balancer belt pullies were shot to bits and i have ended up having to remove the belt. If i didnt it would have snapped taking the cam belt with it. this was "changed" about 4000 miles ago by GB ongaro when they were still going but after removal i could tell that the belt was old and extremely worn lol. I have also had to replace the MAF sensor and ecu reset as i couldnt get above 4000rpm. oh the joys of owning an alfa

Don't believe service history records  I brought mine in February with a full service history 60000 on the clock and all of the stamps. What a crock of crap! It's stood me at about £800 up to now I've still got another 6 or 7 hundred to go before it's all sorted. Not that I'm moaning or owt but to quote Public Enemy. "Don't Believe The Hype."

the diesel sound is 99.9% the camshaft variator...they should have done it with a repair kit while they were doing the cambelt as it's a 5min job and the repair kit is like 10GBP....

Depending on how bad is the variator, the repair kit will or will not work for long...Mine lasted for about 1000 miles until the funny noises started again....I suppose if you change it with every cambelt change rather than wait for the variator to start rattling, it will have a better effect.
Btw some time ago I bought a brand new variator on Ebay for 50 quid....so just have a look around :)

I'm sure you have your variator still in place :D ...what they haven't done is replace the spring in the variator...this is not something that would usually be included in the cam belt change....what I meant was it is pretty quick and easy...and cheap, once you've taken all the belts etc down and it would probably have cured the diesel sounds at least for a while...

well it may be the case that you need a new variator as it's just too late for the repair kit...so if i were you i'd ask them if they've tried with the repair kit first

before you go get all excited about head gasgets and water pumps etc try testing the fan speed resistor to see if its still working.

run a fan actuator test using diagnostic software, if neither of the fan speeds work, fan speed resistor fault. short the plugs out on the resistor as a temp fix if nothing else works.

maybe a £20 fix rather than £200.

oh yeh and the veriator part only should be around £100 at best, not the £200 being quoted around here!
