Yup, that hoary old chestnut again. Not something I've been overly concerned with but given the rising price of diesel I intend now to complain to ARUK and AR Italy.
Tell you for why. I was told today that AR Italy are instructing dealers to remap cars to cure the fuel consumption problem. I believe that the remap upgrades the 200bhp cars to the 210 spec, which, from early reports, seems to have better fuel consumption. If AR are doing this in Italy, they should be doing it here also.
I thought if we could organise a campaign along the lines of the 2.2JTS Hesitation thread we might have some success. So I will be emailing ARUK and AR Italy to complain and I would urge other 2.4 Brera and 159 drivers to do likewise.
Also, could I ask a mod to make this thread a sticky please.
My first drive after delivery - Bradford to Inverness, ~370 miles and an average of 38mpg, driving relatively easily, as I was settling in!
Today, the 13 mile journey to work on 95% A-Road returned 44mpg, though that was maintaining about 50-55mph due to slow moving vehicles and a lack of overtaking opportunities!
I have to say, the gearing has been set for the eu tests, a constant 50-60 you should get the circa 45mpg, as per extra urban. it's just a shame that nobody does 50-60 on motorways, dual carrige ways etc...
Just got rid of a 2.0T Audi A5 petrol to improve my fuel consumption on a 110 mile a day commute. Picked up my 2.4 sportwagon at the weekend and with the lightest of right foot I'm getting 30.6..... Crikey! My thisty A5 got me 33.......
Does the remap work or not folks? Need to work out if it's worth the money. 5mpg would make a big difference...

Yep definitely worth it, with your location you'd be mad to go anywhere else than Alfatune Motorsport, they can disable your EGR and remove the DPF, the DPF when it does a regen uses up a load of fuel and causes other issues ...
... one thing to consider though is the 159 is a much bigger and heavier car (espically in the 2.4 version) than the TT, so you're not going to get amazing MPG
From what I have read a remap, EGR disable and DPF removal should see you average 40+ mpg as well as having a huge grin on your face The fuel saving along should pay for the mods fairly quickly!
I suggest you start a thread asking people to comment on there AlfaTune work ... that should make up your mind (together with the fact that dynachip can't disable EGR or remove DPFs ...)
I drove London to Cornwall the other day in my old 2.4 JTD SW its nearly 10 years old now, I was not hanging around 80 ish... you know ! and I got 44 to the gallon. I thought the newer engines would be returning even more guess its not all about economy but with the price of fuel may be I'll hang on to my old SW for a bit longer.
Incidently can any one tell me what I might get mpg wise from a 2.4 20v multi jet unit (the 175 bhp one) in the later 156's ?
Cheers
The main reason for your better mpg is because your car is significantly smaller and lighter than the new cars ... As for mpg of the newer models, if you drive it the same it will be roughly the same mpg
Picked up my 210 Brera this morning and drove 90 miles home from the dealer, using A and B roads for about 20 mins (with some spirited overtaking) and the rest motorway miles, averaging 37.1 mpg very happy with that but to be honest if I had only got 27 mpg I would be happy, what a great car, I love it:thumbs:
I can only dream of that kind of figure Parkiewoo.
On friday my Brera was booked in for a day od "investigation" at Chris Variava to include MPG, intermittent stuttering.
On the way down the M18 & M1 staying at legal motorway cruise I got 32mph.
After a day of looking around Nottingham I returned to be told that "that's all you can get out of one of those, the laptops not found any faults or anything out of tolerance, but here is a bottle of desiel supplement to put in it to see if it makes it better"
Car is still under warranty, but not sure who to approach / how to tackle it now?
On a run up to Northumberland this week, will watch with interest and see how it goes
You need to look at getting the DPF removed and the EGR valve bypassed... every one has reported gains of 8+ mpg by doing this. Got to be worth thinking about!
Hi Jerry,
Myself not being very technically minded, is there any way I could tell if the DPF has been removed and if the EGR valve is indeed being bypassed for my car?
Hi there, have you measured fuel over a long period now? I am looking at buying a 159 2.4 and doing 35k per year means fuel is a major item. If Gus can really fix this, I will buy one.
Thanks for any advice.

Quite new here but will post my experiences with my 07 Brera 2.4
Averaging 33.6mpg that's a mixture of city and motorway driving (about 35 miles a day)
Did an 800 mile run last weekend from Manchester to Carradale and managed 37.86mpg which made me well chuffed.
Am still pondering the dpf removal by Gus and more than likely will get it done so hope to get a little bit better, but it not then at least I rid myself of the dpf issue
I had a 2.4 ten valve 156SW which returned 43 to 44 mpg overall, with mid 50's easily achieved on longer runs. 50mpg and 50mph on one occasion. I have now got a 2.0JTD Brera which disappoints with mid thirties overall and mid forties on longer runs. The word on the ground here is that the diesel particulate filter is the problem, restricting the engines breathing.

Wow, I'm stunned to hear the new 2.0jtdm can't do any better than that. I had the option last year to wait for the 2.0jtdm or get the 2.4jtdm.... Fortunately I got the 2.4jtdm. I had terrible fuel economy initially but after 4k miles it started to get a bit better as expected. Around 7k I had the Alfatune remap and dpf removal done and since then I get ~43mpg doing the same commute every day.... And an engine that runs smooth as silk and a car that goes like a bat out of hell should I want it to. To me it was worth it all the way!
When in doubt - remove the dpf, delete egr or you'll regret it forever...
There must be nearly 100 posts on this thread alone pointing the finger at the dreaded DPF and EGR.... Removing them along with a remap will free up another 10mpg in most cases.
It is interesting that the DPF is there to reduce pollution, when removing it will straight away reduce over all pollution by somewhere between 25 - 33% by increasing MPG. When my warranty runs out I thing that will be the first thing i do

Does anyone know if the someone in Kiwiland does the remap and DPF removal work? Would seem frustrating and slightly pointless buying a diesel 159 otherwise........
Dpf removal going to happen for me. The diesel isn't perfect and the removal should make it much better from a driving perspective, feel and maybe some extra mileage.
Mine is horrible right now with around 25 the norm with lots of town driving. Even when mixed with motorway it doesn't get much past 30.
I'm still trying to convince the missus it's a good idea to remove the DPF even though it'll take 2 years to recoup the costs. Telling her 'it will be faster as well' doesn't seem to be working!
Yep..... The dpf doesn't withdraw/neutralise any exhaust gas. Its sole purpose is to remove diesel particles and since DPF's aren't by law required on cars, the level of diesel particles isn't really tested. So long as the cat is still installed, it will pass MOT....
Read (most) of the thread with interest and so removal of said gubbins looks like the way forward and probably a re-map as well, question is, can anyone recommend a garage to do this and by recommend I mean somewhere that YOU have had it done, not 'I heard from a bloke down the pub'.
Somewhere in The Oxon/Glos area would be nice but I'm willing to travel for a proper job.
ok, my 159 2.4 (210) used to average around 32-33 mpg on a combined driving cycle including long & short runs.
Now I've had the F1 Remap done, including removing the DPF, & shutting the EGR off.
I must say that the average mpg has now gone up to 36-37 and I'm quite pleased.
My recent long drive from Gloucester to London return with a lot of spirited driving / overtaking on the A40, and a good run on the M40, returned me figures of 44mpg.
I would anyday take these numbers for a car that looks and drives like my 159
Newbie speaking,
This sounds nice. 16-17 mpg on running back and forward to work and Tescos at the moment. Will look forward to hopefully getting my 159.
