Hello

I'm seeking advice regarding a 156 Lusso 2.4 JTD.

Recently got the Motor Control System Failure message on the dashboard. Then it disappeared by itself after 2 days, but it then reappeared again yesterday and it looks like it's there to stay.

Anyone know what that means / implies?

The car runs well although it produces generous amounts of black smoke when I rev it up (even when I'm doing 60 in 6th gear and give it a little boost to go to 70). Also there is quite a lot of smell (burnt diesel) coming out of the exhaust. Not sure if that's normal.

Any advice would be more than welcome.

Many thanks in advance

mate you are asking us to identify a needle in a hay stack.

the error message means simply that there is a fault code generated that is serious enough to put the warning light on. not all error messages call for a warning light to be displayed.

a warning will keep the MSCF light / warning on for the next 6 or so engine starts and if the fault is not present after that then the warning light goes away, however it will come back again if the fault reoccurs.

so at this point all you can be sure of is that you have a reoccuring fault or more than one fault noted by your cars computer.

without any significant symptoms being displayed the only real way to find out what problem you have is to get your car plugged into a computer and the fault codes read. that is the only sure fire way to find out whats going on.

a MAF sensor is mass air flow meter and measure the amount of air coming into the car. its a fairly common fault on alfas.
