I need some help. I recently bought a 1.9 159 and I'm pretty disappointed with the fuel consumption.

It's quite difficult to know what to expect from previous threads, people seem to get vastly different figures.

I wondered if some of you might fill in this short survey and give me a benchmark to work with

MPG Survey

I'll post some results when I get some, if this has already been done, please let me know.

Also, if you've got any general tips on how I might diagnose if this is an issue, or just normal, I'd love to hear them.

Or tips on how to improve the consumption through additives, or 'giving it a blast' or things like that.
unfortunately, my work routine means, I don't love it as much as I want to, it typically gets 20 minutes of urban driving twice a day, on its most common journeys, I know this is hardly ideal and I take every opportunity to get it out on A roads and Motorways but I'd have loved this to be part of my commute.

Finally if anybody knows anywhere in South Yorkshire that you'd recommend for looking into this with a more specialist eye then that would help too.

My brera 2.4 has never done better than 32 ( according to the computer) in mixed driving. (when I commute it's at night so the London traffic is'nt too bad). It's not really worried me because I've had petrols before which usually returned 25 or 26 and the performance is very un-diesel! My wife's company VW passat estate does about 50mpg but she'd rather drive the brera if she gets the chance.

Cheers, this is pretty interesting, most of my journeys are less than half an hour, so its hard to tell how much of the poor economy is due to the fact the engine is cold.
But currently my trip computer says an average of 26 for what is mostly short urban journeys for a 1.9 - I'm beginning to think this might be an issue. When I drive sensibly after the engine is warm I do start getting better consumption, I'd say mid 30's, but that would seem more inline with what people are getting from a 2.4 and mine is only the 1.9

Realistically if I take this into somewhere that knows Alfa's what are they going to be checking? I mean it's something that seems really hard to diagnose.

@Muggin86

I've had my 159 2.0 JTDm SW for 7 months and 11k miles now, I travel from the Midland to N Yorks on a Sunday, cover about 12 miles during the week and do N Yorks to the Midlands on a Friday. For the run North or South I'll get a displayed 41 - 42mpg, add to this a bit of town work over the weekend, and a tank to tank refill will often cough up 44mpg over the week. Whilst pottering around town today its showing 33 mpg. Apologies for not filling in the survey.

Common topic that is fairly easy to answer.

If you do good miles ie long journeys on A&B roads + motorways then 45mpg is very achievable and probably what most owners would expect as a minimum for the 1.9

However the car hates town driving - it's a big heavy beast and chugging around town at less than 20mph kills it's economy....you'll struggle to get much above 30mpg which is pretty disappointing

People saying they are getting over 40mpg for town driving are telling porkies i'm afraid :tut:

Got 25 responses, enough to work with, thanks. - data attached @mikeyw's reply summarised really well. Also quite a few people commented on cold engines returning much worse economy.
Remaps seemed to return about 5mpg better economy.

I'm glad you did this, I was a little worried from what people had said about mpg that making a move to a diseasel brera wouldn't actually have that much of an affect on running costs due to the relatively short A & B road journeys I undertake daily.

Our Beemer will do 600 miles to a tank on long constant velocity runs but when I'm using it on a daily basis the economy does dive significantly.

My GTA is giving me roughly 15 mpg so doubling the length of time I am required to go without filling up would be nice. :)

just done 500 miles and used the brim to brim method to calculate mpg... was relying on the trip computer to give me my mpg readings which was a big mistake. Avg consumption read 46.5 mpg but when calculating it based on litres needed to fill tank I got 38.5 mpg :( very poor for mainly motorway miles and a light right foot!!!!

Checking tyre pressures makes a big difference. As does a clean EGR, my mpg has shot up over the last week after fitting the modded gasket and cleaning the valve.

I tried an additive when using supermarket fuel, no real difference seen either way from me.

My car has just over 87K now, so very well run in!

I also see a pretty close match to the brim to brim and the trip computer.

The economy certainly doesn't meet other marques in many respects, but I cam from a petrol car, so it seems a real saving to me! I'm generally pretty happy with the engine in most respects. Other than a dicky DPF for a day and 2 EGR valve cleans it has been pretty robust. Even after a twinkle of magic Angel dust on the ECU.....

I did drill the 3mm hole in an attempt to get the solenoid out, but it seemed pretty happy to be in there, so I gave up trying to knock it out for fear of bending the thing. The hole actually became pretty useful for cleaning that part, I sprayed carb cleaner in there, then blew it out of the bottom end. Left to dry then sprayed a touch of lube in there. Certainly hasn't done any harm.
