And yes, it's got some problems ha ha!

I think one of the rear wheel bearings is on it's way out, but I'll get that sorted...

It's the other little niggles that I need to pick your brains about.

1. The windows.

They go all the way down fine, but on the way back up, they go up in stages. You have to pull the switch up, they go up and stop. You have to let the switch go, and pull it again and they move again. It takes about 8 or 9 flicks to get the windows fully up. Is this a common fault? If so, how do I fix it?

2. The gear shift.

It's a 1.9 JTD, and the gear shift is a bit sloppy. It pulls well in all gears, but the gear stick is a nightmare. You have to be quite firm and assertive to get it into gear, but even then, you can still put it into 4th when you're looking for 6th. Is this a sign of a worn box (thinking worse case scenario) or is it more than likely the linkage? The gearstick has got no "spring" to it, and doesn't return to the middle when you take it out of gear. The car has done 117800, but does have a FSH.

Thanks for taking the time to read this anyway, and I hope someone can come up with some answers for me. I'd appreciate it if you could.

Thanks again.

Craig.

Oh, I forgot...

The passenger side door light (at the bottom of the door)... The case has been broken. Where can I get one of these? I'm going to try a salvage yard not far from mine tomorrow, but if anyone knows of a place I can get one guaranteed, I'd be really greatful if I could find out where.

Thanks.

The gear change problem will be the linkage, it's a very common problem in the GT and 147 and as fixing Alfa problems go it's a cheap one to fix as well.:)

It's to do with the bushes in the linkage, there is loads of posts on it, try searching this section for "gear selector plate" and you'll find loads of helpful threads.

On the windows, a simple 'soft reset' should solve this-the question has been asked and answered many times before. Basically, 'wind' them down all the way, hold the button for a few seconds, then 'wind' them up all the way and hold the button at the top for a few seconds.

On your gears, I don't like giving opinions like this online as it's easy to be wrong, but it could be something as simple as worn gear linkage, which is a simple and relatively inexpensive fix (I had this issue previously). Get a mechanic to have a look.

Re. the light, I'm sure an Alfa dealer would be guaranteed to have one, but maybe try Autolusso to see if they are breaking a GT at the moment.

Hi all...

So I done this "soft reset", and it worked a treat, thanks! But there is a "but"... Ha ha ha!

The passenger side window is fine, but the drivers side window is a different story. I opened the door, the window dropped, closed the door, and nothing. I drove home, playing with the switch, then it closed.... Then it worked fine. The next day, I opened the door, window dropped, closed the door, window stayed down... Opened the door again, and closed it, the window went up, then didn't work.

I've had the door card off and the multimeter out. There's power going to the motor and power going to the switch.

Since this, it works every now and then when I open the door, but it never goes back up?

Also, I've had a little search on here, but can't find too much info an blanking off the EGR valve. I've had the engine management light come on, and it said it was overboost. I was going to blank it off though. Will this have much of an effect on the car? I was looking to get it remapped as well, because a friend will do it at mates rates.

No point in a re-map if you have an inherent problem.Check the vacuum pipes on the turbo - common cause of overboost faults.

Yeah, I want to get the fault sorted first, and everything seems to be suggesting the EGR valve... Although I must admit, it does sound like I might have a bit of a boost leak. The man remapping it said he wouldn't touch it until I've got them problems sorted anyway. He's a mate's brother, and he's only charging me £150 for it.

Also, a mate is supplying and fitting a genuine Alfa clutch (I'm picking the clutch up from Alfa myself) for £350, does that sound about right? I know my mate is possibly one of the best in the business when it comes to clutches and gearboxes, but I've never looked into the pricing on a clutch for this.
