Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and was hoping some of you may be able to give me some advice. I've been reading that I should get the cam belt changed on my 147 at 36,000 miles (which it's just clocked) but when I managed to track down a garage in my area that can do it, they told me there was no point even checking it, let along replacing it (i think due to the labour involved). Is there any truth in this? And do any of you know roughly what an Alfa specialist would charge for the work? Also, do any of you know what kind of mileage I can get out of my timing belt?
Cheers

Best advice to give you mate is DON'T USE THAT GARAGE FOR IT!

You are correct, it might sound like not very many miles for a belt change, especially when you consider some HDI diesel engines nowadays don't require a cambelt change until 150,000 but these Twinspark engines are a different kettle of fish. The original interval was set at 72,000 miles but Alfa changed their mind later on about this and changed it to 36,000...they must have had good reason to do so (i.e. multiple cambelt failures)!

The belt also requires a special set of tools to fit correctly so I would definately use the Alfa specialist for this job. I paid £370 for a belt change on a 2.0 TS (included cambelt, tensioners and balance belt) at a so called Alfa specialist when I bought the car (48,000 miles) but I was never give the option to replace the variator which has just started to rattle so I would definately get that done as the timing belt has to come of to get at it.

Hazz37 is right mate. The guys in EK are brill.
My timing belt was overdue (my car has done 32,000!) and I worried until I got it replaced by them.
I put my car in all polished and clean and it came back to me in the same condition.
I also got a wee alfa sticky interior thingy as a bonus from them :)
I went for a quote from another alfa specialist near shawlands and he quoted me a lot more.
Go for it and you will be in good mind about your car being healthy for years to come......looks great when you go to sell it eventually as well that it has been looked after.
