Typical, called a garage today to get belt and variator done, 1hr later what happens !!!!!!!!
Any clues on the costs to repair, it is a 1.6 SW TS.

Cheers

Maybe its because its been asked a million times and if you use the search function there are millions of replies!!!

You need a good specialist such as Rebuilds they will know what needs to be done, including new big end shells.

oh ****, that's terrible... it depends on what or how many valves got taken out... basically it's gunna be a bill for a head rebuild + x amount of valves + big ends replacement and crank inspection

plus after all that belt and variator...

not gunna be cheap.... i wouldn't know cost as i'm in OZ unfort. over here it would be $3-4k easy at a reasonably priced independent. which is second hand inspected motor territory, which is perhaps not a bad idea for a 1.6...

what stage was it in yrs and miles before the belt went?

u can't blame the OP... 12k mi and the belt goes? really? the original advice from alfa was 5 yrs was it not?
Mileage is not relevant when it is a year over due. Origional advice was pants - hence the change.

cam belts are the most ridiculous thing in the world, even if you stick to the intervals, there is no guarantee they will hold. i've heard first hans of an early vectra that let go at 2 years / 22k, when the interval is 10 years / 86k

dead right, there is no inertia at start up, just from 0 to 300rpm in a split second, even when thrashing the engine eg at 5000rpm there is not the same strain in the belt as the cams and valves etc are already moving

so, if you Alfa does mainly frequent short runs the belt will need doing much sooner than a mainly long distance motorway car,
