hi everyone,

On my drive home this evening from portsmouth up the A3 to surrey. i found that the headlamps weren't very bright and didnt really light up the road as well as i would like.

Obviously driving back at speed ''70'' :p on the motorway it is sorter nice to be able to see where your going.
Rather than fitting off the market HID kits to make them brighter is there any of those ultra bright bulbs out there you would recomend? and do they rele work?

thanks for any input Sean.

Halfords do some extra bright ones that fit, and do work. You can also get main brand ones (Philips? Osram?) from internet sellers.

I'd also recommend taking a look at the state of the headlight glass - it does tend to mist up a little over time. There's a guide on this forum somewhere on how to take the headlight unit apart and clean the glass.

I run hid and the best money I spent on it, got the kit for 60 quid of ebay,

Gtv lights are rubbish as they only have a little hole to project through

my freind has a a3 with 4300k hids same as mine and his lights spread more light which in affect is brighter, I will post a picture later of the difference

I used some Ring 50% Extra purchased from eBay on a BOGOFF, got four for £25.

I'm very impressed with them, made a massive difference.

A word of warning. Before buying anything physically check what bulbs you need. Some use HB3, some use HB4 and some use a mix of both !!!

I'm not going to comment about the HID's, lots of previous discussion on here if you wish to look.

hi itacarboy Great photos and im turning towards getting that HID kit, just one last question did it fit straight on and was it an easy install, eg no modification made to the headlamp (huge holes cut in it or anything silly like that?) thanks sean.

not trying to be devils advocate or anything, as i do agree the original lamps were pony compared to the ultra bright ones i have in now, but do you not blind people coming the other way with an HID kit?

i could have gone one lamp brighter (extreme or something from halfrauds) but decided against it for that same reason...

as nige said earlier on iin the thread, there are some lenghty discussions about the legality / blinding issues with HID kits. it might be worth doing a search on here to find out some answers. hope this helps. for what it's worth, i would like to compare my standard set up with some other options as my lights are (dangerously at times) pants.

i completely agree with you Lee, the lights on the spidey were absolutely shocking until i upgraded. I had one side go out on me on the way to work the other morning and driving along the dark section of the A27 with my front fogs on was scary to say the least..

i will have a dig and then a little read about the HID debate

Well it is a very good point about blinding people, but you have two options maybe 3

1 don't care as it's not u coming other way
2 set the headlamp adjusters to 1 on the switch inside the car
3 take your car to a garage when the hids have been on for 30 mins or so and get them to adjust to the legal hight

simples

TBH, I think the HID option is a good one, if you don't go for the brightest/whitest option. The Bi-Xenon headlights fitted to my company car are just as bright, and are of course legal, and are fitted as standard on many cars these days.

My GTV doesn't have the HID kit fitted BTW..... :)

ok so looks like HID kits are the way im going to go :D because the way i see it i rather blind someone else than crash in the dark. i no its not very nice but hey! i will ajust them properly so they dont point into the sky. thanks for all the help.

If you're dead set on fitting HIDs I'd strongly recommend cleaning the inside of the headlight glass first.

If you don't, any internal misting may scatter the light and blind oncoming traffic even if the lights are adjusted correctly.

You may think that blinding oncomers is OK, but if they end up crashing into you it's not so good

ok when i get round to doing it in the next few weeks i will post all the info (where, when, how) and before and after photos. just give me a bit of time to get it all sorted out, so keep your eyes out for an update. Sean

ok all, decided to have a go at the headlight cleaning bit this morning. after a quick trip to autolusso to get a replacement headlight for the one i'd just smashed - ooops! - i gave up and went to halfrauds for the extreme brilliance bulbs on 2 for 1 offer (24.99 for the HB3). all i can say is WOW! they are now oficially up to normal car standards, i.e i can see at night  well worth it people.
