I'm on buying a set of NGK iridium spark plugs for my little 1.3 boxer (fuel injected), but before I do that I thought would be better to consult with you guys and to ask if anyone of you have tried before this kind of spark plugs and if it's worth it???
Hi, a friend of mine tried that on a 1.7 engine and sadly they didn't work. As long as he kept it under 3000 rpm, he didn't have any problems, but when he tried to rev higher the engine stalled. At the dealership they told him, that the electrical power was insufficient for them to work higher (Don't know how exactly to phrase it) .
You won't gain anything by using Iridium plugs and as they are not adjustable they may not have the correct gap anyway, so you would loose power, or cut-out altogether (as above).
Hi David,
the iridium ones that I'm going to get do have a 0.8mm gap...
I suppose they will work fine than.
What is the difference between the platinum & iridium ones...apart the crazy price the last ones have in here
I have seen somewhere on the net they say the iridium plugs increase throttle response, they deliver more power, you get a better acceleration and you get a better fuel economy...better performance.
Cheers
Elvis
I have fitted them to my 16V 1400 engine. Havent seen any problems. I did adjust mine to the setting used when setting the car up on the rollers. Cant honestly say they have made a huge difference but havent used the car much yet.
I believe the platinum plugs were used in the 16v cat version due to increased heat and for longer exchange interval. We all know what a P.I.T.A it is to change them on a 16v, not sure about the uridium ones though, i was wondering the same.
i had a friend who tried NGK iridium sparks on his 16v. He run it for a week , then it started missfiring and eventually the car did not start !
I took his sparks out and they were black and soaked in fuel :wow:
Changed sparks back to 4 spoke golden lodge and the car has been fine ever since
He asked for them when he took his car for a service at the dealership.
The mechanics there took the book and found the corresponding spark for his car in Iridium and thats what they installed.
To be fair , they did tell him that those sparks were not recomended for that engine, but he wanted them anyway.
He thought he would get extra power or something
I c
i can see no reason why he should have anyproblems if they are rated as the same temps, just last longer. If thats the case i might get some when i need to replace mine.
Elvis, could you let us know
I was told that NGK were not getting any sales on them because they were too expensive, so they discounted them and they ended up being cheaper than the Platinum lol.
When i got my car, a 16v with no cat, in preperation for replacing the cat i fitted platinium and noticed a stronger higher tick over and easier start up compaired to the others that were fitted. Did his 16v have a cat?
I have been told that platinium were fitted because of longer change intervals and heat rating for cat on 16v, but looking in the parts book they are rated the same temp as the standard one for a non cat 16v, so is one to assume that they only fitted so you dont have to change so often?
I had NGK Iridiums in my '87 Sprint and had no problems (can't remember the number on them now). Ran clean and probably gave slightly better economy and starting. I will be putting them in my 16V when the Golden Lodges are due for replacement soon.
I just put some nice NGK iridium IX sparkplugs to my little boxer and what I have noticed, apart the better performance and throttle response they give to the car, I notice they work even better when the engine is really hot, totally different from the Beru ones I used to have before that didn’t work very well at 85*-90*…the car didn’t pull the same after getting warm!!
After feeling the difference from the spark plugs, I decided to go for an injector ultrasound cleaning procedure to a friend of mine to see how the car was going to behave and the results were amazing…
- a lot of power is back
- grate acceleration
- very good response when you push the pedal and the car feels lighter
- takes less time to rev up to 7500 rpm
And yes the iridium plugs have a 0.8 mm gap...and I got them to a friend of mine for a good price, I think..., 61 Euro for the box of 4 plugs.
Hey guys I’m really happy now never had the car in this good form before…I’m again in love with her…
It may sound stupid for some of you, but I have the sensation that my car isn't pulling the same anymore... it was FANTASTIC for 3-4 days after changing the spark plugs to iridium and cleaning the injectors with ultrasound, but since 2 days now I have the feeling that it's going back very close to the performance it used to do before I serviced it!!! Fells like it doesn't have the same power as those days, I don't feel her pulling a lot and having that acceleration and response when you push the pedal like it did the days before.
Maybe is just my impression, maybe I got used of the new performance and it doesn't feels exiting any more...I don't know!
What do you guys think, what happened, is it normal, did anyone else have this situation with their car.
Could lambda sensor affect so much to the performance, if it is faulty???
I don't know...I just want my IMOLA back to that very GOOD FORM it was
Ohhh, later I'll take the plugs out to check how did they work this first week...
Cheers,
Elvis
