16v on carbs - camshaft opinions?

Hi folks,

I've got a 16v engine without any of the injection kit. I've also got a set of Dellorto 45 carbs. We're talking about building the 16v as a 1600 with these carbs. Any opinions on what to do with cams? Not planning at this stage to do oversized valves.

Will the 45s be too big for the standard cams? How wild a cam can you go with the hydraulic tappets? Where can we source solid tappets (other than AHM) - is there another car/make that fit?

This is for a track car so driveability not an issue. 1600 is so that we fit in that capacity class.

thanks,
Evan.

Did your 16v come from a 33 or a 145/6? The cams in the 33 have a bit more kick in them so they would be my preference over the 145/6 cams that are in mine.

I just finished a 16v on carbs yesterday running 40's with bigger jets and its just about ok. 45's will be fine with the 16v engine. Sorry cant help with the solid tappets.

Hi Evan,

I just built up an 1600 cc engine with carbs, I use cams from www.cat-cams.be with solid tappets from Renault 16v and Weber 44 IDF..

Nice... Thanks alot - I'll try to get my hands on some solid tappets from a Renault 16V. But I don't know how much I have to drill or smoothen out to get the solid tappets installed - Do you have a small guide or some measurements? :)

Hi, 45s will be ok just dont go any bigger than 34 on the chokes or it will drive like a pig below 2800rpm that will give max power at roughly 6500rpm. I run 40s with 32 chokes max power at 6100 150bhp and it drives well at lower revs. It all depends weather its going to be a screeming track day car or a quick road car that you can live with in traffic. hope this helps. hello sprint337,

i got some of those manifolds from ebay too.. i'm no where near readt to fit to the engine tho,..
What are yours doing thats making them leak? i have noticed on mine some of the drillings / tappings are not 100%, are you also getting air and water leaks?
any heads up/info would be great, cheers

all the drillings were wrong, bore of the manifold does not fit to the carbs. I had to weld all drillings and drill again, also I skimmed both surfaces.
After starting the engine I had water leaks at the manifolds. Causal is, you have no room for tigthen the nuts as it might be, even if you take smaller nuts

I got my manifolds on ebay too and the only problem i had with them was the locations for the bolts on the throttle linkage and having to get the air servo & water temp sensor drilled out and re-tapped. no other problems with water/air leaks.

I'd be interested to know if there are any alternatives though

Yeah they were but TBH I didn't think it warranted going back to him about it. I was very pleased with them in general and thought the quality and fitment was quite good. The servo/sensors from the later 145/6 fit the manifolds but I was using 33 parts and they were slightly different. Its a custom engine install (to a point) so I was expecting the odd issue to work around.

I had some manifolds from motorman too and they leaked. The quality of metal was poor I believe, it was almost as if they were porous. We ran lots of head sealant through them. Now they only leak a tiny amount when they are cold. He said he would replace them, but then stopped returning my emails.
