hi guys

i have a 2.0ts and i have just had my cam belt balance belt and the variator done.

the car has also been serviced with 0-40w fully sysnthetic oil

but when i rev my car up in the higher range i get a rattle which sounds simler to a vtec noise but not quite as loud,

it does not do it all the time only when it is foot to the floor and revs out.

it is def not an exhaust rattle or a head sheild,

any ideas ?

no deff not a external to the engine.

it is rattle noise sounds like top end but i asked the mechanic to have a look and he said he could not see anything out of place.

it done it b4 and after i serviced it and had the cambelt done at the garage.

im just worried its bottom end

Obviously with out hearing it it's hard for me to say but by what youve described thats what it sounds like. Will want the variator solenoid removing and the plunger and housing cleaning out and refitting.

The engine wants a flush adding and driving for 20 mins making sure you rev it over 3000 rpm to flush all the top end of the engine. While its hot drain the oil and change the filter. Refill it with 4.4 litres of 10W-40 semi synthetic oil we use Shell Helix just make sure its a decent brand.

I did a 147 like this last week and have done a lot suffering with similar complaints.

It won't be the oil. A 0w-40 is thinner than a 10w-40 when cold but the same when hot (which is ideally what you want). I have used this grade (And 5w-40)in several twinnies with no problems.

They have C0cked up something at the belt change almost certainly IMO, especially as since the change the noise has appeared.

Probably the timing is out, or a tensioner is not fitted correctly.

it done this b4 and after the belt change got better when it was serviced

i know that bloke who done it and he told me that the timing was out who ever done the last belt change so not sure if that has knakerd something up

Just flushing the oil should be enough, but if they fitted a new variator it shouldn't be full of crap in the first place.

It sounds to me like they have done the job without the correct cam locks to be honest.

it done it before symonh do you think it is from a previos belt change and the cams are damaged?

when i put the new fully syn in i gave it a good flush with that forte, and it did get better so maybe it just needs another if it has not been serviced well

Do what JJB motors says first and clean out the solenoid.

If that doesn't do it then it may be that the solenoid is not working altogether, in which case you need to look at the box of relays under the bonnet, as the contacts or connections may be corroded.

I am not 100% sure where they are on the GTV but they may be under the plastic cover behind the passenger side headlamp.

Take off the silver cam cover, and you will see it.

Have a read of this guide as it tell you how to clean it about halway down the page.

The cam variator

The engine on the guide is an earlier Aluminium cam cover version but the solenoid is the same.

This solenoid controls the oil going into the variator, which in turn advances the cam timing. The part at the top of the guide tells you how it works.
