Have you checked the exhaust manifold heat shield isnt broken,or too close to the manifold? The mechanic might have leant on it while working on the car:tut:
Obviously with out hearing it it's hard for me to say but by what youve described thats what it sounds like. Will want the variator solenoid removing and the plunger and housing cleaning out and refitting.
The engine wants a flush adding and driving for 20 mins making sure you rev it over 3000 rpm to flush all the top end of the engine. While its hot drain the oil and change the filter. Refill it with 4.4 litres of 10W-40 semi synthetic oil we use Shell Helix just make sure its a decent brand.
I did a 147 like this last week and have done a lot suffering with similar complaints.
It won't be the oil. A 0w-40 is thinner than a 10w-40 when cold but the same when hot (which is ideally what you want). I have used this grade (And 5w-40)in several twinnies with no problems.
They have C0cked up something at the belt change almost certainly IMO, especially as since the change the noise has appeared.
Probably the timing is out, or a tensioner is not fitted correctly.
No the top end of the engine and oil ways to the variator could be full of crap hence why flushing the engine and cleaning out the variator solenoid plunger housing generally cures your symptoms.
no i do understand what you are saying im just asking wheather its a manual cleaning job with engine apart or wheather its just a case of a few oil flushes
it done it before symonh do you think it is from a previos belt change and the cams are damaged?
when i put the new fully syn in i gave it a good flush with that forte, and it did get better so maybe it just needs another if it has not been serviced well
Do what JJB motors says first and clean out the solenoid.
If that doesn't do it then it may be that the solenoid is not working altogether, in which case you need to look at the box of relays under the bonnet, as the contacts or connections may be corroded.
I am not 100% sure where they are on the GTV but they may be under the plastic cover behind the passenger side headlamp.
The engine on the guide is an earlier Aluminium cam cover version but the solenoid is the same.
This solenoid controls the oil going into the variator, which in turn advances the cam timing. The part at the top of the guide tells you how it works.
ok guys thanks for the help will have a crack at it on the weekend and let you know
