GTV or Spider

I'm seriously thinking of ditching the 156 later in the year and getting either a GTV or a Spider. I love the look of the Red GTV Cup cars and although I'd probably end up with a TS engined car, I can still see it being lots of fun.

However the thought of whipping along with the roof down on a Spider is also appealing. I've found a couple for sale on the Isle of Wight, but both are over-priced for the condition their in IMO. Here they are by the way:
Alfa Romeo Spider Convertible., Isle of Wight | Wightbay.com
Alfa Romeo GTV - Leather etc - New Mot on Purchase!, Isle of Wight | Wightbay.com

The GTV is wrong colour for starters, it HAS to be Red or Black for me, but what are peoples thoughts? Which is better a Spider or a GTV? The car won't be an everyday car, but I do have 2 small dogs to fit in as well, so I'm guessing the Spider won't be able to fit them in.

Ahh, an age old question and one that I've been thinking about too.

I know that my next whatever it is will be a V6 and having changed my mind lots of times, and may well do so again, currently I reckon I'm sticking with the GTV.

There was a discussion about this last year and iirc the decision went to the Spider. It's a personal decision and at the end of the day it just might come down to whichever car seems the best deal at the time you are looking.

Not been much help here have I ? :D

Tough one ... personally I think I'd go for the GTV ...

Really depending on your preference, my friend has a GTV and I have a Spider, both performance more or less the same. I personally would definitely go for Spider because of the better you can hear the TS engine sound while roof is down. For you GTV may suit you more because of your small dogs. Hope it helps.

last year i had a GTV TS this year the chance came up to bag a Spider TS......

No regrets with my decision, both of them are used in the same way (weekend cars) and both get driven hard

The back seat in the GTV was never used so only have 2 seats in the spider is not an issue

I would go with the GTV, it drives better due to the body being stiffer.

A spider is very nice on a sunny day though.

i think it depends on your budget as well...if,for arguments sake say its 2k,then you will probably be looking at a entry level P1 Spider but on a GTV that will get you a great P2 and alot newer...check out the two interiors and see witch you prefer as this will probably also come between your choice...

And also check out the thread titled along the lines of "will my dogs fit in a gtv"...it was quite popular recently and involved great advice like Spider95's above!! :cheese: (Spieder95 thats not a swipe at you!! I actually think its good advice!)

i've got a v6 gtv, and must admit I ruled out the spider when I first started shopping due to "not needing a convertible"

Since I've started driving convertibles day to day, I'm actually imagining how much better my car would be if only it had the ability to fold it's roof.

I'd go spider, but anything other than the v6 and I think i'd miss the power.

Agree joeydawson, jettison the pooches, revolting smelly hairy globules that shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a 916 car:lol: Honestly, I've just replied to another thread about paying 40 quid for an air filter for one of these cars, what is going on? Have we been transported to a parallel universe:lol: I think I need a holiday in the sun:lol:

Seriously, I would go Spider. It is an extremely pleasurable experience to drive these cars with the roof down. The OE windbreak also makes it very comfortable on longer journeys, and in virtually all temperatures. And you can hear the engine, lovely through the tunnels. Can't beat it:)

Right I bought a spider Ts in Novemeber .......by the Feb I went back to a gtv V6. I think this says its all ...to be fair I normaly have high performance cars, so i found the Ts just lacking what I personaly need form a weekend car, its sounds pretty nice but i do not like to be beaten on the lights as such......:p ..o yeah looks not a lot in it but I went for a Zoe yellow spider as I personaly feel is the best looking colour for one loks amazing in the daylight

Thanks for the Advice guys.

I think I'll sell my 156 after it gets me back from Le Mans mid June and then put that into getting a GTV, V6 if there is one about. I think I'll have about £3K to play with.

My spider Ts is great.
But for sheer driving pleasure its has to be my GTV 3.0, it's sublime, beautifull to look at and when you open the bonnet just behold that engine. Its truly a machine to get excited about on many levels.
Much more ridgid than the spider. A more 'driveable car all round'

I find the lack of rigidity quite amusing, certainly makes giving it the beens around the twisties good fun.

I'd be interested in the opinion of people with strut braces, does anyone have bottom braces or is it just tops. I had both on my 306 cab and it made the thing great on the B-roads, it would **** it's leg everywhere. I had lowered it 80mm all round tho'.
Major sacrifice was the ride as it was pretty much unbearable. The main reason I changed cars. I fancied a little bit of comfort, power, looks, no roof and it had to have a pininfarina badge so it had to be a spider.
I do think in an ideal world I would have a GTV V6 as well, but I can't justify having three cars.
