Hi,

I was hoping to order brakepads (and discs) for my 1999 1.8 today, but brakeparts.co.uk are listing 3 different types (BPS2398, BPS2519 and BPS2547)

Is there any way of knowing which I need without taking the existing pads off (which I won't be able to do until weekend)? :(

Cheers,

Iain

You can either take Donalds up on his offer, or take one of your wheels off and have a look. The give away will be the outer pad, if it has a large lump on the top (larger than the one shown on their website), then thats the one. If not it's a choice between the square or round wear sensor wire plug. Pull it appart and have a look.

Good luck.

PS I suspect Donalds will be cheaper.

buypartsby will be MUCH cheaper and similar quality! Sorry Donalds Alfa!!

iainfm: Solid or Vented front discs ??? ... 1.8s came with either depending upon build-date. This makes a big difference. You should be able to see the disc through the wheel holes ....

Gen is always better! Unless there specific performance enhanced!
Not necessarily. Manufacturers will work with a limited number of friction material companies when specifying OE parts, tending to stick with their favoured suppliers, usually within their own country & with price very much in mind.

The 'best' from the manufacturer's point of view may not be the best available - modern cars are designed by accountants!

Mine came from buypartby and have lasted three years and around 40000 miles of driving ... and I'm not always light on the brakes. They were Delphi-Lucas parts and so a good brand. Discs and pads for just over £100 including P&P and Very Awful Tax.

Motor factors will always beat a dealer on price and most of the time the parts are as good. QH, Lucas, Mintex, etc ... Let's face it, Alfa are going to buy their branded parts from one of the better manufacturers .. at least I hope they do!!

When I changed mine the dealer price was over 4 times buypartby's price .. and that was without labour ...

buypartsby suggests MDB1735 or MDB1934 for front pads. (These will be Mintex part numbers if you need to x-reference them)

Given the 1934's are also quoted for vented discs, I'm pretty sure you'd want the 1735s but please double check. The buypartsby website has drawings of the two types and also shows the wear indicator plug shape.

BTW: brakeparts were the company that sent me the wrong master cylinder for my 156 .... if that gives you any indication ....
