£1200 is about right for a new actuator, although some 156/147/GT use a lower cost actuator, but it needs to match your gearbox.
If you go to a main dealer, 99.9% of the time that will say "actuator"...
In your case it may be the only solution and I don't know if there are any good indy Alfa specialists in your area, but if there are, get the car to them.

ALso - I am sure I read somewhere on here that someone managed to fix an actuator using replacement brushes from a VW/Audi alternator. Can anyone confirm this??

u mention in 1st post that u got flashing numbers on display, that means u got low pressure, prolly due to leak or faulty sele pump.
find a indy to get a check on whole system, all hoses, pump, oil reservoir. it is unlikely that actuator itself leaks (but happens ),
"You need new actuator sir" is a standard dealer answer, if u can afford it - take time and do proper diagnosis, or ask dealer mechanics to pin point the failure to u.

Thanks Zorrn. You guys on here have an unbelievable amount of knowledge on these cars! I'll be getting the car back on Saturday and I'll be asking them to pinpoint the fault. I expect them to be able to tell me something for their money! I'll get it checked over by someone else and see what happens
I agree with all these guys, its very, very rarely that its your actuator thats at fault, its usualy something else that means the actuator is getting the wrong infornmation. The other thing to check is the clutch rod is the exact right length, although 99% its the either the selespeed pump, low pressure, or a leak caused by a damaged oil sump which sits very, very low, almost speedbump low. Alfa will usually say it's the actuator- get a new one, and then the new one will go wrong again, and guess what they'll say it's the actuator again...and again. check clutch and pump first then gearbox!
Cheers guys. I'm getting the car back tomorrow. The dealer wants £220 for investigating the fault. Do you know if theres anything I can do about this??
OK, got it back now. It has now got 1st and 2nd gears?? when trying to select 3rd it goes back to neutral. Garage still say actuator and say they ruled out hydraulic and electrical system...
