Just released on italiaspeed:

ALFA ROMEO 158

The GM 'Premium' platform based 156 replacement will make its debut late next year. The entry-level version will be a 150hp 1.8 JTS followed by two all-alloy units, a 170hp 2.0JTS and a 190hp 2.2 JTS. The new Orbital/Fiat-GM Powertrain 'Electron' alloy V6 engine which has been heavily revised by Alfa Romeo engineers will come in two specifications: a 230hp 2.8 V6 JTS and a 260hp 3.2 V6 JTS.

Topping the range will be a 300hp probable 2.2-litre capacity supercharged engine while the GTA will boast a twinturbo version of the new 3.2-litre V6 JTS with 400hp. For Alfa Romeo's North American comeback in 2006/7 a US-aimed GTA version will feature Maserati's 4.2-litre V8.

Diesel options will come in the shape of an entry-level 120bhp 1.9-litre unit utilising second generation Multijet technology, a higher-specification version with 160bhp, followed by a 200bhp 2.4 Multijet and a range topping 3.2-litre Multijet with an expected 230+bhp on tap.

As Alfa Romeo gear up to take BMW head on, so the size of the new 158 will increase, 180mm longer, 90mm wider but 30mm lower than the current 156. This will form a trend as the 147 replacement will be the widest car in its class.

MY GOD guys! eek!

Is it me or are we missing the point here!

It's not about the fact that any particular american CAN'T DESIGN CARS! It's about GM designing ****ty cars (in my opinion) and we're discussing the possibility here of GM taking over AR.

And there is a reason why that yank is designing cars for BMW.....it's because he fits the phylosophy of BMW.

Sjeez.....

GM Europe cars are worthy, but dull. They are "reasonably" reliable and "reasonably" well put together. Model for model, the Corsa is as good as a Punto, the Astra as good as a Stilo, the Zafira as good as the Multipla, the Vectra certainly better than a Marea. The Omega is a worthy, if old exec car in the traditional big engined rear wheel drive style.

AR is owned by a mass producer of uninspring cars, and may be taken over by another one. SO what's the problem??

Well Ricks,

I guess my concern is that GM will have bad influence on car design of AR.

For instance the platform that will be shared (Opel Vectra, Saab 9-3, Saab 9-5). I just hope that AR will have enough autonomy to continue their own way (and maybe they could even profit from the Opel dash built quality while they're at it) and keep on building the cars I started to love since a couple of years.

I've driven VW, I've driven Mitsu's, I've driven Mercies (although oldies) and I'm driving an Alfa now and nothing, and I really mean nothing could beat that Alfa feeling.

Of course we have to wait and see what will happen

My friend is a Saab enthusiast and they are going through the same angst. The new 9-3 is heavily GM based, but still retains Saab styling and character. wink

I'm definitely not a fan of Opel (what's in a name?), but as opposed to my Bella's dash, I've never heard an Opel dash squeek or rattle.....and I would definitely like Alfa Romeo to improve on this. This should just NOT be allowed these days. And if Alfa really wants to compete with BMW, than they have to improve a lot when it comes to build quality.

Stori,

I'm affraid Australians have different taste than Americans have different taste than Europeans....well at least than me. I don't like big muscled cars that have, imo, bad design. When I see that HSV, the first thing that comes up in my mind is Hyundai.

So sorry I don't like it. I'd prefer a GTA above that everyday. Where the hell should I be able to reach 300km/h eek! I would 5hit my pants! And for reaching 300km/h I would prefer a Porsche or a Dodge Viper (one of the few american cars I do like!). And yes, 300km/h is definitely slow compared to the McLaren F1 391km/h record

When you see one in the flesh it does not look like a Hyundai. And you would not be able to see the Hyundai for all the smoke :D
The bottom one, you will definitely see if you are ever in the UK as Vauxhaull is supposedly to import 400 of them in 2004.
The diference between an Australian Muscle car and a US one is that the Australian one is also designed to go around corners.
Now not as good as an Alfa around corners but the Alfa would have been left well behind so you do not need the ultimate cornering ability.
Also 5 people can travel in comfort with all their luggage eek! :D

Stori,

I have to correct my Hyundai remark. You're right about that. That HSV looks indeed quite nice.

I bet there's a V8 engine in there, right?

I agree, but I still don't think that GM (opel) should be the rolemodel...

Weren't you promoting those the other day??
Are you on commission?? :D

The Holden HSV saloon was quite well received by the UK enthusiasts press, but the problem was it cost the same as a BMW M5, so it was a bit of a no brainer really. If it was half the price, it would sell. wink

I find Alfa build quality totally good enough today. And Alfa did compete with BMW for my money just few months ago. Alfa won 6-0. But I'm not a perfectionist, of course.

I'll wait and see what comes out from the GM-affected Alfa factory before I start to worry too much.

For me the role model when it comes to build quality of dashboards has to be Audi/VW/BMW. But since Opel would be the sistercompany of Alfa Romeo, I think it would be the logical choice to shop at Opel's for lessons on how to build squeek and rattle free dashboards, don't you think?

Only a small 5.7 liter V8 :D
or if you are poor a 3.8 liter supercharged V6

I understand what you're saying. But none of my previous VW Golf's had one single creak or squeel coming from the dash. And my Bella does have that. My choice for the Bella was a pure emotional choice and I love my bella more than my previous cars all together, but I really think it's bad Alfa just is not able to make rattle-free dashboards. That's really not good in my opinion. I would definitely go for AR next time I have to order a car, don't get me wrong, but I hope that AR will be able to improve on the rattles.....they are just ANNOYING  :D
