Hello all! :)

Firstly, not been on in a while... lady trouble! in my ear all day long! Oh, seen a black Spider today in Lincoln... isn't one on her is it?

OK, so I think I have a water leak... well, the substance is water... Anyhow, I gave my car a bit of a run today and as usual she sits on 80+ loverly. Now, the temp gauge is usually around 50 from starting onwards and around them speeds and stays steady until I reach the city after day out on faster roads... when it'll go up to 90 or so, which is to be expected due to the heat and slower speeds.

Now, today, it sat on just under 90 on the gauge, but lowered to around 50 degress at times... When I looked under the car there was a small amount of water dripping from the tubing at the back of the engine, 1 drip every 5 seconds or so... sorry I can say exactly the correct area, I dont know much about engines, but enjoy driving, hence the alfa!

Now, does this sound like a big problem or something that will be quickly resolved? The dripping has now stopped, as the car has been stationary for 3 hours or so.

Any details or information of the next steps I should take would be very much appreciated.

James.

Sounds to me that the dripping water is from the aircon system and as such is normal.

Are you losing water from the cooling ( NOT aircon) system ? Just check the level on the expansion tank at the R/H side of the engine bay, it's well marked, just note the level when the engine is cold and check it over the next few days, it shouldn't vary.

Does sound like you have a faulty thermostat though. This would not lose you any water but will cause the temperature fluctuations you describe. It's a very common problem, a Thread search will show you just how common, and it's not a major job.

For peace of mind it will be worth your while to call in to see Tom and Phil at BLS on Great Northern Terrace, good guys, very knowledgeable and they tell it as it is, they will discuss any problems that you think you have and will fix them for you if you wish.

Good Luck.

Definately a faulty Thermostat, the engine should be at 90'C within 5 minutes of starting and should only vary that temprature by 3'C either way whilst driving, whilst the guage is saying your at 50'C you are wasting fuel, the ECU will automatically throw in more as it thins the engine is still cold, pretty much just like a choke on a carbed engine. Replace it and you'll enjoy driving even more as your probably losing around 20+BHP whilst it's doing this.

Hello all, many thanks for all that, seems a thermostate problem... and such, Ill pop over the the chaps mentioned below and see what they say... Is there any contact number that you know of?

All of what you have said has made sense... The aircon was on during the day I was using the car, this saturday just gone, hot!

Many thanks again.
